The Broken Wheel

Unauthorized leaning on the wheel

Without my doctor’s permission, I have decided to quit wearing the boot. I iced my ankle this morning and then took my leg out for a spin today and it felt great. Using crutches, I put just a little weight on it and boy was that a sensation.

After a few tries, I found that the leg can bear some weight and that the ankle has a little flexibility. The only problem is the swelling.

I have been trying to move my foot ever so slightly in the evenings.

OK. So, I’m an impatient patient. But I feel good and I’m seven weeks removed from surgery. Physical therapy starts in a week.

Why did you decide to ditch the boot? Did you try to put weight on it with the boot?

I understand (I think) your sentiments. The only thing is — none of us wants to go through this twice! Please be careful!

the healing ends of the surgically repaired torn tendon are healing . the only thing that can disrupt healing is stretching the tendon prematurely .it acn be done b weight bearing on your leg . i hope your tendon is healed enough to accomodate the weight you are puttig on it .

Thanks to both tennisjunkie and screwdriver. I am being careful. Yesterday’s was a day of frustration and I took a few steps to convince myself there would be progress made. I also felt my doctor was being too conservative.

Yes, I did put weight on the leg when I was in the boot. I plan on wearing the boot when I travel and commute and need reinforcement.

But you’re right, I do not want to go through this again.

Hi,
I’m almost 7 weeks post-op, and my Doc told me yesterday I can try out of the boot and into a shoe this weekend. I too start physio next week. I am back to work next week as well (on my feet all day), as per my Doc’s advice. I will take my boot along as I assume my foot will get tired quickly. Have you been removing wedges, or changing the angle in your heel in you boot at all? My foot is now at 90 degrees, after removing a 1/2 inch wedge each week for the last 4 weeks. My Doc’s goal was to get me to 90 degrees, then to allow me to walk without the boot. How much longer does your Doc want you in the boot? Are you finding this scary too? The last thing any of us want is to cause more damage to ourselves! I am hoping the physiotherapist will help with guidelines on what is safe to do, or not.
Take care,
Jen

Jenny, yes, I have been trying different angles and I have tried a wedge in the shoe. This is all a bit premature. The doctor wanted me in the boot through this week. It is all very scary.
