The Broken Wheel

Strange doctor’s visit

After four weeks of PT, the doctor wanted me to come in for a checkup. I told him I was concerned about three things that I was not sure were normal:

  1. That I had constant swelling that made most shoes uncomfortable and even socks.
  2. I had almost constant numbness in my heel
  3. I had pain directly on the spot where the tendon ripped and was sewn together. It feels as if its bruised, but more than bruised like hit-with-a-lead-pipe bruised.

He said not to worry about No. 3, that there was scar tissue I needed to break up. This was normal and that I should work through the pain rather than stop an activity.

The doctor felt it unlikely but worried that No. 1 and 2 was a blood clot. Doppler test — an ultrasound looking at the arteries — came back negative.

Not sure what to make of any of this, but there it is.

brokenwheel - sorry to hear that you have pain in the spot where the achilles was repaired.

If it’s really painful, I don’t know if it should be hurting that much after 15 weeks. You may want to search the site and see if others have experienced similar pain. Check the main site for information on blood clots, and check bri’s blog for info on her experiences with blood clot. I think it’s better to err on the side of caution on things like this.

I’m only a week or so ahead of you, and I have some similar symptoms: numbness on the top of my foot, and pain around the incision.

I’ve attributed the pain on the incision to scar tissue, it seems to hurt most the day after a good rub down in PT.

I’ve attributed the numbness to the constricted blood flow due to swelling. The numbness isn’t nearly as bad as it was right after surgery, and I’ve read that it isn’t un-common to experience some numbness for up to 6 months.

I just consider these reminders that it is a long healing process and try to make comparissons with where I’m at on a weekly or even monthly basis as opposed to a daily one.
