Ditch the *$%#@ Aircast!!

Time flies when you’re having fun!!

So let’s see…I’ve been in the Aircast for 5 weeks…2 weeks 50% WB, and almost 3 weeks FWB. I’m now almost 10 weeks and ditching the Aircast as of today. Slower than many patients but I’m comfortable with the more conservative pace of recovery. Have been doing ROM work for 5 weeks.

So…today…into a shoe. That means I need to take two shoes of each kind on my next trip! No wedges. He said I didn’t need the wedges but if it was uncomfortable I could put one in for awhile. ROM is good, the incision has healed well. (a play on words…achilles “heal” or “heel”?) :)

ROM is good. Start physical therapy tomorrow and it’s limited to ROM, more passive resistance for two weeks. After two weeks, start on strength work.

As for activities: I can walk “all I want”. I can keep exercising on the exercise bike but without much resistance (been doing it with the boot). He wants me to wait to get on my road bike for 4 weeks (after 2 weeks of strength work at PT). I can “chip and putt” on the golf course in my shoes. If I want to put my boot on, I could play/practice full swing. Basically my take is that he wants me to have 4 weeks of PT, including 2 weeks of strength work before I do anything that is too strenuous. I asked when I could “jump off a cliff”. He seemed to contemplate that…and what I meant (jumping off a cliff?)…for a second, then I said “kidding”.

So basically in a month I should be able to participate in my regular activities. Yippee!!

I need to race Ross down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon!

Still, based on, say, a 9-month marathon, I’m at mile 6.7.

All kinds of good news today. Congrats John and welcome back to the 2 shoes club! It’s pretty cool to hang out in one shoe for awhile, but it does become a passing fad. Keep working on the ROM and passive resistance. One day closer to “jumping off that cliff”!

John…
congrats on the good news. Let me know what the PT is doing. The more info we can all get the better. As for racing down the grand canyon…let’s’ go….May 17th thru the 24th..

Keep us posted..

Doc Ross

John - that’s great! Congrats! :P

Congrats skier…

If U and Doc Ross actually race to the bottom of the Grand Canyon make sure U have a copter on standy to haul your butts out of there !!!

Chili..

That’s exactly what I’ll be doing. It’s a 9-10 mile hike to the river, 4 days camping and rafting then a helicopter ride out of the canyon. Then off to Vegas for some imbibing, gambling and sun.

Has anyone looked into purchasing a walking stick/staff, I’m going to need one.

Doc Ross

I did think to take another shoe with me.

Doc Ross - Haven’t looked at walking sticks but Leki makes “trekking poles” which are basically like ski poles. They come in pairs and are “antishock” which I think mean the tip is spring loaded. I also believe that the length is adjustable. You see folks hiking with them and I think people who use them tend to use both poles so that they reduce the strain on both legs (helps reduce the pounding on knees).

Try a google search for “Leki trekking poles”.

Johnskier - awesome! I think I’m on the same track as you..probably another 2-3 weeks in my boot. As for the Leki poles, I have a pair and they are great! Got them originally for backcountry snowboarding (snowshoeing in), but now use them for regular hiking and will use them once I get back in a shoe for sure. They make different tips for different uses, and I would recommend the extendable version with the shock absorbing spring as they are much easier on the wrists/arms.

I just wanted to mention that you were the one of the very first to find the site (I think Go11 mentioned the site to you), and the first person to start a blog about the Achilles recovery here.

It’s really great to hear that you are out of the boot/aircast and that you’ve started walking in normal shoes now.

It’s been great to read your posts from the very beginning, and thanks for celebrating and comiserating with the rest of us throughout the good/bad days.

I had some thoughts of printing out some t-shirts
to mail out to people who have reached 2-shoes milestones, but my lack of graphic design skills and that people might think it’s silly have prevented me from doing this. ;) My girlfriend thought it was silly.

Btw, I hope to maybe run into you (not literally) on the slopes next season. I’ll definitely be in either Alta or Snowbird, but I might take a trip out to Colorado for some change of venue. I was at Vail some years ago, and I loved it!

I don’t think T shirts are a crazy idea…

It’s been therapeutic for us all to share our experiences and I’ve learned a ton from others. I think it helps to create a focus on recovery and also helping others if you can (not so much “me, me, me”). We truly appreciate your hard work on this Dennis…you have done your good deed for the year!

Definitely come out and ski. I’ll be here…and I’ll share some of my favorite runs.

johnskier and all -

I’ve added the ability to specify custom goal date to the
Recovery Progress NYC Marathon Widget
. So you can now track a 9-month recovery marathon, instead of the default 1-year recovery marathon.

Updating the instructions now..

Still, based on, say, a 9-month marathon, I’m at mile 6.7
