Finally released and back to work!!

My ortho released me last Wed the 16th and then I got cleared to return to work by the UPS doctors on the 17th…So this past Monday, after only 22 weeks off work, I returned to the big brown truck. Funny how all weekend I felt like a convicted felon having to report to the prison on Monday morning..I was a bit worried about going from doing nothing to going wide open again all at once…Monday was really tough, very hot, I’m outta shape, etc etc…but I was really pleased with the way my achilles held up…it was a little sore but nothing major…I’m wearing an ankle brace so maybe that is what is keeping all the swelling down..I figured it would really balloon up–but it hasn’t…anyway–so far so good, I’m just trying to take it one day at a time..good luck to all and keep your spirits up..Kevin

Hi Kevin, glad to hear it was a successful return to normal. I’ve been struggling with a wound that won’t quite close so it’s nice to hear success stories.

Btw, what ankle brace are you wearing? I am definitely planning on getting one.

daveleft–Hang in there buddy and thanks for the comments..I got a prescription for the brace, it is by ASO “Med SPec”..heavy duty ankle brace basically–keeps everything in line…only problem it does take a day or two to get used to it rubbing against the incision area..Kevin

Kev,

Great news mate, good to hear that you have returned to the land of the wage maker !

Johnk :)

Glad to hear things went well. I think of you often in part because of the amount of time you had to take off, but also the rigorous work you would be doing when you returned.

A brace I found helpful between ATR and surgery was a relatively inexpensive (I think it was under $15-20) black nylon brace with 3 Velcro straps (one down each side and under the heel, and one that wrapped around just above the ankle) and laces, that ties like a shoe in front. This seemed to offered a great deal of support during the 12 days between ATR and surgery. It may be a useful alternative for someone who can’t afford the MedSpec.

Don’t run off and forget us here - keep us posted! At least you have a few months to get back into the swing of things before the holiday rush! :)

Hey Kevin!

I am only 8 weeks post-op, and I have been released to start walking with a heel in the shoe. Doc did not recommend driving with a stickshift, as I own; too dangerous in case of braking. Meanwhile, I am a professional driver like you, and very anxious to get back to my job for the height of the tourist season. I have tried to research online whether professional drivers are more likely to suffer ATR’s than others. Could it be possible, that we are stressing the right AT? Scary to thinnk that we must consider our future employment, if it’s advisable to carry on.
