A bump On the road to recovery

February 6th, 2009 · 10 Comments

Well, it’s getting close to my 1 year anniversary of my Achilles tendon rupture and my surgery date, which was 3 days after my injury, but I am afraid I have a bit of bad news.  A small bump on the road, so to speak.. and literally too.

I played basketball last weeks on both Wednesday and Thursday.  I played this Wednesday too, and I noticed that my Achilles tendon on my recovering foot was noticibly swollen.  The bump just above the heel is more pronounced than it used to be, as recent as 2-3 weeks ago.  It has been feeling a bit funny too, so I am going to abstain from any sort of physical activity for a few more days and see how my achilles feels.

The thing is though, my achilles never really hurt much.  Even when I ruptured it, it didn’t hurt much so I am worried that it can be a lot worse than how my body is telling me through “pain”.

The swelling has come down a bit, but it feels a bit funny.  It doesn’t feel quite right.  I’ll keep you posted.  I didn’t expect this kind of news after this being almost a year since the injury.  Maybe back to back basketball night is no longer possible for me.  Or it could be that basketball is no longer a possibility for me, period.  Well, we’ll see.  I’ll keep you posted.  I’ll post some pictures too this weekend.

I am a little disappointed and worried, but hell I’ll take what I can get.  I can still run/walk.  It didn’t re-rupture.  It doesn’t hurt.

My favorite day of the week was Wednesday because I always played basketball on Wednesday.  My second favorite day was Thursday because I sometimes played basketball.

I hope this doesn’t discourage anyone who’s starting out on the recovery.  I think most people recovering from ATR have been fine this far out on recovery.   It could be temporary setback for me too. Who knows?

I’m just looking forward to getting as far as you have. I am doing well though, just shy of 4 months post op.

Dennis: Don’t worry yet! Sometimes when scar tissue starts to break off it can present like that. If you give it a regular massage it will dissipate if it is scar tissue. Hang in there!

Hi Dennis, That sounds strangely familiar. I also had noticed a bump or knob right above my heel, not huge, not painful, but just a spot that wasn’t there before. I also felt that my leg felt ‘funny’ for lack of a better term, no pain, no weakness, just different. I even told someone “my leg just feels really weird today” I’m at 11 months post op now and this happened about 2 weeks ago. I just got back from 3 days on the snowboard in Mammoth, CA. I was amazed how good I felt, much better than the same time last year pre injury. No soreness after, in fact, my calf seems stronger after the trip. Good to see a post from you again.

56 yo male 11 months out of surgery. Fit before and after injury. Played BB with worn out no support trail runners on mushy/uneven floor and wham. Had some pain prior from too many heavy calf raises but not enough to cause alarm of impending doom. Still weak, stiff, achy, limpy but the good news is I’m able to ski again. Strengthwise only 50%? Can’t push off of for lay-up. Seems almost alien. But will keep working it in hope of more improvement.

walshie - don’t worry. It’s not a rerupture. Just a bit of swelling.. and it’s gone down so I think it’s okay. I played basketball this past Sunday and it was fine. :)

    Hey Dennis,

First time checking in for a while. I was going to post a similar experience. I’ve been playing 3+ times/week, but the last week or two I haven’t felt as good as before. I’ve tried to remember the basic thought that this recovery process is a long one, and it may be a number of months before I feel “normal” on a day-in / day-out basis.

    Best of luck to you!
