This is just a quick update.
Brendan has been kind enough to maintain the AchillesBlog Injury Rehab tracker spreadsheet. Currently there are 23 people on the list, and it’s been fascinating following everyone’s progress. I would have never imagined that there would be so many people with the same injury gathering in one place. Thanks Brendan!
I’ve been doing some work on the web-based Injury/Surgery Date Summary Table, and I hope to expand on that. Hopefully everything will be automated so you can enter your complete information on the Achilles Profile. I think it’ll take several more weeks..
I’ve been very happy to see that everyone is using the Achilles Timeline widget. I hope it’s been handy!
Thanks to everyone, the amount of resource related to Achilles Tendon Rupture and rehabilitation has grown quite a bit, and I think I’ll be able to gain access to other papers that are restricted (requiring membership and $$). So please let me know if there are papers that you’ve found that you can only access the abstract to and would like to read the full text. If there are legal issues on posting those papers here, if we encounter that problem, I’ll do my best to summarize the findings and post that instead.
Please continue to let me know of other relevant information that you find, and I’ll continue to post it on the main site.
I’ve been experimenting with putting a small number of advertising on the main site. I have been feeling a twinge of guilt as I was afraid that it’ll lower the quality of the site. I’ve thought hard, and decided to only place ads where it makes sense and would not be too obtrusive to the content of the pages.
It’s just on the main site. Obviously there will never be advertising on your personal blogs, as they belong to you.
Product ads are placed on the “Things you might need” sections, since it can inform everyone about what some of the things are available to aid in your recovery. I hope that it’s beneficial to everyone who is browsing that section. The Amazon search box is on the top right, and please use it when purchasing items from Amazon.
There are a small number of ads right above the “Site-wide Recent Comments”. I’ve tested putting image ads in that section, but realized that they were too distracting. So I’ve just placed a few text ads there instead.
I hope these changes don’t degrade to the quality of the site. If everyone feels strongly one way or another, please let me know.
Also, please shout if you have any suggestions on how to make this site more useful.
Well, enough of the superfluous issues, and I hope everyone is well on their way to full recovery!
thanks!

Dennis - I think the site is awesome….I used it last night for research in prep for my appt today and it was great. I would like to have the “all comments” section on my personal blog page as well..but it may just be the template that I’m using that doesn’t allow that?

Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better.
The ability to have all the comments is actually a bit more involved than that. It has taken a bit of coding work for me to do this.
I actually contributed a plugin to wpmudev.org as a result of my tweaking.
Here it is: http://wpmudev.org/project/Sitewide-recent-comments
Well, to have site-wide comments, you really need to have a sidebar that’s wide. I tweaked an existing theme to make it like this.
So long story short.. if you want to have site-wide comments, you can use the same theme as my page, or deal with the narrowness of the sidebar on the theme that you are using.
If you are okay with the narrow width of your sidebar containing the comments, then I can make some changes to your theme.. or I can build a widget around it so that everyone can use it on their sidebar like they are doing with the Achilles Timeline. Let me look into the widget idea, that might be the best way to go, but it’ll take some time for me to modify the code to turn it into a widget.

Thanks Dennis…I didn’t realize it was that in depth. It’s really not that big of a deal to come to the main site to see. And like you said a few weeks ago, ideally, ongoing discussion is best done in a forum format. However in a site like this with multiple blogs on one subject, it is handy to see all comments from all blogs in one place. The only downside is that the comments/discussion is not necessarily linear in format and is a bit tough to follow if you want to go back and research the discussion for information later…or if you come to site for the first time and want to “catch up” on the happenings. Once you spend a few days navigating it though, it becomes pretty easy to follow. Thanks again for setting this up though….as a few others have just mentioned, this gathering of people around this one injury has really been helpful for my recovery. In this day, when 5 minute visits with your doc are a reality, it is impossible to get all your information from your healthcare provider. And when things come up between visits, I don’t know about everyone else’s experiences with providers, but it’s hard to get them answered quickly. Have a good weekend all!

That gives me another idea for development. I think the comments can be organized in such a way that it’s easy to catch up or search for information.
I thought about feeding all the comments into a forum, but that wouldn’t exactly solve all the problems.
Maybe a separate page for the comments that can be organized in different ways? (by user, by post, most recent site-wide, most recent on individual blog, etc.)
What do you think?

rutured my achilles 2/22/08 playing volleyball had surgery the 28th / was also wondering if the tenden grows back together . and the sutures dissolve ?

Rob - It’s nice to have another vballer on the site, although I’m sorry you had to join us. The tendon does grow back together. Your body produces collagen fibers which start to form around the rupture site, connecting the two ends back together. This is why your repaired tendon will feel much thicker than the other tendon.
A few others have commented about the sutures. It seems like most surgeons are using a fiberwire material that does not dissolve.

Of course, your article is good enough, casinosite but I thought it would be much better to see professional photos and videos together. There are articles and photos on these topics on my homepage, so please visit and share your opinions.
