I am at week 16 and my calf muscle is coming back but still puny. At the end of the day my ankle is swollen to about twice the size of the good one. For those of you that are ahead of me on this road, when does the ankle no longer swell? And when will I be done with cankles? Just in case someone out there doesn’t know, a cankle is when you can’t tell where the calf leaves off and the ankle begins. And another question, for those who are so inclined, when can I wear heels again? I must be feeling better because vanity seems to be setting in….
Dear Catnboot — I am just finishing week 17 and boy do I hear you sister! Cankles just do not work for me, but my doctor has repeatedly told me that I am right on track for healing and I can see that I have less & less swelling. The whole process is just so slow!! I have a whole closetful of heels that are begging to be worn, and I am tired of my Danskos and Sketchers. Found a pair of lower heeled boots at DSW (Kenneth Cole Reaction) that I think might tide me over the winter months, but I am with you: the vanity thing has become a hurdle now that the bigger challenges have been met! I want my wardrobe back!! Hang in there kiddo, and let me know how you progress. Compared to all we have been through, I know this too shall pass.
O boy. I’m at 8 weeks & I have maybe up to 9 more weeks to keep sporting my cankle if I’m up too long? I’m not one for heels but here in Colorado (where I live) & Wyoming (where my doc is), my doc has recommended cowboy boots!
I’m there with you! I wish I would have read your post first about “cankles”.
Yes - I too belong to the cankle club.
I put my runners on for the first time yesterday (was given the get out of jail free card on Friday and no longer wear the aircast).
I am going to go shoe shopping today if I can manage it - need to find something with an open back (thinking maybe a pair of clogs?) - don’t know for sure. I am in British Columbia, Canada and we are starting to get snow now - so will be challenged with boots - arrgh - not looking forward to trying to get those on and off.
I did buy a pair of Tender Tootsie boots a few weeks ago, in anticipation of bad weather, with a zip over the front, but haven’t been able to get my foot into the left one yet…..I don’t want to spend a lot of $ on shoes that have a short life span for me (translation = ugly and only using because they are the only thing that fits…)
Good luck with your recovery!
