2 and a half weeks post surgery the Dr put me into the boot. Staples came out with some trouble, but the incision looks to be healing well. After a couple of days in the boot and wearing a sock, there still seems to be a good amount of perspiration. When I do take my foot out of the boot to get some air, I become extremely nervous that Ill forget and try to stand up or kick something. Starting PT next week, approx 3 weeks post-op and looking forwards to it…anything that is a progression to recovery!
I have been working from home for 3 weeks (2 weeks post-op) and was planning to go into work this week, however, there was a snowstorm here in NY. I definitely don’t want to risk any chance of slipping on any ice or even snow salt since I am still NWB and using both crutches. Ingrained in my head is the constant fear of re-injuring myself while going to work.
The Dr told me I could begin to put weight on the foot as it allows, but I am just too paranoid to even try. How lond did most of you begin to put even the slightest weight down? How tight do you strap on the boot? When/Do you take the boot off?
Any other advice for boot wearing is appreciated!

tron,
had my surgery 12 29 2008,, went to a boot and crutches on Jan 15 2009…about 3 wks…the pa said i could ditch the crutches when I felt like it, but it took another 3 wks before I felt comfortable with just one crutch. the first 10 minutes I was in the boot, the doc and the physician’s assist (pa) had to talk me into putting my foot down on the floor….i started bawling cause I was afraid I would rip it out right there in the doc’s office, but it didnt, and 15 min later, I was a happy yet cautious camper….walking with two crutches, the boot, and with lots of care
wish I could tell you when you feel comfortable, but your body will tell you and you will know….I was most comfortable in the house weightbearing, very cautious outside, and I still, even though I am 9wks post op and two shoes, will wear the boot for grocery shopping and use a cart at wal mart… your foot is the best gauge…strap the boot tightly but do not cut off ciruculation…you want it tight enough for support, yet loose enough to have pink toes…I only took the boot off to take a shower….at 6 wks I could take it off at night, and put it on before my foot ever touched the floor…now I only have to wear it when I am outside, grocery shopping, stuff like that….
Wear socks, or wrap your foot and leg in an ace bandage, supportive, gives the illusion of safety, and warmth of course in these cold days….
good luck!!!!

Hello Tron, It sounds like you are progressing very well. I’m just a week or so ahead of you in recovery time. I just got my boot on Friday and it is so much better than a cast. I also have been working from home as it is way easier to get around the house and safer. I wear my boot most all day but have taken it off for a few hours will sitting on the couch. It feels great to just let it rest free. I always were the boot to move about and I am wearing it at night just to be safe. I’m still totally non weight bearing for one more week. My Dr. is a bit more conservative and I’m okay with it as my leg is feeling stronger day by day. Just doing the simple up and down foot motion feels better today than yesterday, etc. It is a slow process and takes a ton of patience, which I am not so good at but trying to be careful not to do any damage while still doing some movement to keep up circulation and regain some range of motion. Best of luck in your full recovery!
