6 days Post Op
This blog is so much better than watching TV. I am 6 days post op and everything seems to be going well. No pain and no meds. I am lucky that my doctor (Dr. Edward Holt in Annapolis, MD) put me in a boot post op. No weight for the first 4 weeks and then 4 more weeks in the boot. It doesn’t seem that bad after reading so many of the other “plaster stories”. Anyway, good luck to all. I will keep everyone up to date when I can. My first post op visit is on the 29th.
PS get a roll-about or other rolling device instead of crutches.
I agree about something that rolls, especially if you live alone for those NWB days - nothing like being drugged, nauseous, on 1 leg AND learning to use crutches! I used a rolling office chair around the house but would use crutches if I was just going to the rest room, as a way to help build some strength and practice for longer crutching events.

I agree on the boot vs the cast. The cast kept me nice and safe for the first couple of weeks, but it wasn’t very forgiving with any swelling and it wasn’t very sanitary after two weeks.
My only caution would be to ALWAYS wear your boot if you are using your crutches. I had my cast removed and was so glad to have it off I wasn’t wearing my boot around the house. After all, I really would only get up to use the bathroom or go from the couch to the desk or my bed.
I was sitting in the pool at about 3 1/2 weeks. It was hot, my incision was healed and I was going from the pool to a nearby lounge chair when I had a mistep on my crutches. A split second was all it took to instinctively put my injured foot down and “crack.” My incision started to bleed a little and my tendon hurt pretty bad.
The doctor looked at it and said he wasn’t too worried after a physical eval. Luckily, I don’t think I re-ruptured it (MRI results still pending), but I wear my boot religiously now. It’s a pain sometimes, but it beats starting back at zero.
Good luck!
