My story started on the 21st of June
July 23, 2010
I was playing a recreational game of ultimate frisbee, my friends and I thought it would be fun to join something different, it was our 7th week in and I really enjoyed the running aspect of the game. I was running one way, then there was a turn over so I quickly pivoted and was prepared to go into a full sprint and on my take-off I heard a big “POP”. I immediately knew what had happened (I’m an RN in the OR) so immobilized myself right away. I’m a fit, healthy 32 year old woman and because I believe in my body’s ability to heal I ultimately opted for a non-surgical approach. My story starts there and I have lots more to say and ask!

Great start, Kris! If you can, install the widget at http://achillesblog.com/dennis/2008/03/08/achilles-timeline-widget/ , so we can all keep track of where you “stand”!

Welcome fellow disc-chaser (although it sounds like you are new to the game). I’ve been playing on and off for >20 years and did my ATR while playing pickup last September. I am proof that returning to ultimate is doable - I started playing indoors last March and put the cleats back on in May. Make sure you check out normofthenorth’s page for non-op rehab.

Hello nursekris,
We had our ATR on the same day (couldn’t it have been the last day of summer rather?) I choose the non-surgical treatment as well. How are you doing so far? Have you started PT yet?
Good luck
Johanna

Hi Johanna!
What a first day of summer, huh?!
It’ll be so good to be able to compare notes…I had to switch ortho surgeons in order to get the treatment that I believed to be in my best interest (ie. as much like the UWO protocol as possible). The short of it is that at 4 weeks I was taken out of the hard cast where my foot was plantar flexed about 45 degrees and then I had an aircast boot put on with a 2cm heel lift. I just had my first physio appointment yesterday where we did a lot of assisted range of motion and she used ultrasound to help with the healing. The ultrasound has to be at least 7 minutes to be effective. I am FWB on it, except when I come into work where I have to walk a lot I bring my crutches just in case I get too tired with all the getting around. I guess they’re kind of my safety net at this point in time!
How are you doing in your recovery? PT, FWB?
Good luck to you too and stay strong!
Kris

Thanks so much for the note ultidad! It’s so good to hear about someone who is farther along their road to recovery.
I was just new to the game but was enjoying it very much!
I have been checking out Norm’s page, it probably gave me the strength to fight for proper treatment (although being a nurse you become accustomed to standing up to the docs) and to ultimately change ortho surgeons.
Thanks again!
Kris

Hi Kris,
sorry, I haven’t been on the achilles site for quite a while and only saw your response now.
I have been in a boot for about 4 weeks now (FWB) and do daily exercises at home. Will have another appointment next Wednesday and just ‘demand’ PT at that time. I found out that our local hospital offers hytrotherapy as well and can’t wait to get started.
My tendon feels good but I know this is the critical time and will take it easy.
Great that you can start walking in 2 shoes….let me know how it goes!
Happy healing,
Johanna
