VACO cast, has anyone used this for their recovery?
March 29th, 2009
Hello,
I have been doing some research and cast from Germany called the VACO cast has gotten some good publicity. Has anyone used this cast instead of the Bledsoe cast most doctors prescribe. AND if so how much did the VACO cast cost?
Also, anyone convince their doctor to use this cast? You can google VACocast to see what I am talking about. Stories of people using the cast walking normal at 8-10 weeks.
Thoughts?

Hi there - Just this morning I had my post-op appointment and my doc took my cast off and put on the VacoPed boot. I think (hope…) my insurance will cover it but I couldn’t find the cost anywhere because I was curious. At this point all I can say is that it is comfortable enough but I’ll keep you posted. Doc says when I go back in 10 days for my next appt, they change the boot angle again and I’ll be able to put weight on it so that seems pretty fast considering I had my surgery on 3/19.
Hope you have a speedy recovery!

mbailey,
I spoke to dist in Boston and the boot is $195 and should be covered by insurance. I am going to my doc on Friday and trying to get him to consider it. Does your doctor use the Vaco boot often with success? Where are you from?

hi there! i am from the boston area. My doc just received a subspecialty in orthopedic sports medicine and I think he is into progressive/new methods for different injuries. He came highly recommended from the surgery staff as the best person to do my surgery and seems like he has quick recovery times in his patients from using this method/equipment. I wish I had more info. to share with you but I’d say you should ask your doc if he/she would consider it…it is comfortable, a bit cumbersome to take off when I do the little exercise that he said to do (though I imagine you become a wiz with this quickly).
By the way, I really appreciated your posts - very funny and true. It definitely made me smile
This is the 3rd surgery I have had on my right foot (the others were not for the achilles) so I know all too well the tribulations you wrote about. I’ll let you know how it goes with this boot and keep me posted on your experience. Cheers.

Did any of you have more clinical data on the vaco boot or the VacoAchill kit? I have a fairly traditional physician who I would like to show some clinical studies. The US website is lacking and the german one .. . . well it is german. I am going to try to go castless using the vacoachill if he will agree.

Good post. I just wanted to stage out that this is one of the best deals about the net. Really nice.
