Me, Myself & Mr. Achilles

Hello world!

Hi there,

My name is Asier Viteri (from Spain). I just snaped my right Achilles playing basketball 2 weeks ago. Got lucky and had surgery that same day. No pain so far (even when it broke). Since then I am wearing an awful cast that covers my leg up to the mid-thigh, so I can`t even bend my knee.

It encourages me so much reading other peoples coments and experiences. Hope we all get well soon. Patience for all!!!

The good news is that you started the recovery period the same day as your injury! The bad news is the cast up to mid thigh- wow. I hope this is a temporary cast.
I am sorry to welcome you to this club, but this blog is really helpful and full of great information. Not only will you find that US doctors all have different protocols, you will see even greater differences from our clubmembers throughout the world.

hi there and im sorry to hear your ATR problem.
IMO basketball accounts for a lot of the ATR injuries in this site , mine included.
asier how old are you? are there any signs before you tore up your achilles where you are having pain, cramps , etc?

    Thanks for your fast comments.

Tennisjunkie, I’ve seen so far that protocols are very different depending on doctors. I think my treatment might be very conservative (and for sure is a complete torture), I’m loosing quadriceps mass so fastly, but I thing the doctor wants the tendon to recover completely, even if that means that the recovery stage gets longer. Aniway I will get this cast removed in 7 days, and start PWB with another cast & boot for 3 more weeks.

Screwdriver, we had the injury the same day, and also we both were playing basketball!

I am 27 years old. No signals or symtoms were presents before the rupture (did you feel anything before?). I was feeling completly OK (thats the sad part of it, this injury does not give you any warning befor it happens). I’ve played basketball since I was 10 years (the funny thing is I was planning to quit playing at the end of the season ang got injured the last game!), although I have to admit that I haven’t been training so much this year due to lack of time because of work (I just usually went to games without training in the last 3months, not to smart!).

Anyway I’m feeling pretty positive about recovery, and set my mind into positive thinking mode (now I have the time to do all those things I wasn’t doing much this time: paint, read, reflect about life…).

I think in the end ATR will make all of us much better persons.

One day less in the recovery period!
