Informal Poll
Uncategorized June 13th, 2008It looks like a good portion of us ruptured the achilles playing basketball so maybe we can get a decent poll. When my rupture happened, I was wearing a very restrictive type of ankle brace because I have rolled my ankle so many times. I thought this could have possibly immobilized the achilles at the same time it was being stretched and contributed to the rupture. Anybody else wearing any type of ankle brace when their rupture occurred?

I was basketball too…end of the game, doing a walking back-pedal up the court. No brace worn during injury…or ever for that matter.

no braces, but I was running backwards like Brendan.. and then I reversed my momentum to run forward.

basketball here - raptured when i did my usual hop with left leg and then on both legs to jump higher .
i was wearing a very tight new high cut shoes - nike kobe 2 strenght - it has an inner sleeve and is tighter than usual- i could not wear my ankle support so i thought i needed to tighten it up more for good ankle support.
i am thinkng if thre achilles does a lot of work when it contracts - if you put pressure on it on a plane right angle to it - it then must have had more tension toit when contracting.

Basketball, no brace (though I have had more than my share of sprains and rolls over the years).
I was late in the session (~2 hours after start). Flashed to the high post, caught the ball intending to drive, and popped while pushing off my right foot.
I did have relatively new shoes (maybe 10-15 hours on them). In reading the shoe suggestions, I’m wondering if they were too stiff and caused the problem…?

Basketball–no brace popped when pushing off on my right foot as well—but I always did have a lightning fast first step…Kevin

I tore mine at the playboy mansion chasing aroun Hef’s girlfriend Kendra and then I fell into the grotto feet first and SNAP. Just Joking Obviously..I tore mine playing softball, dropping back to catch a fly ball like a QB drops back and plants in the pocket of a football game. No brace, just some shoes that were 1/2 size too big for me because I left my other shoes at home. A very COSTLY error on my part, but no one ever expects for this extreme of an injury to take place..

Basketball no brace… just jumped to catch a pass slightly overthrown. Ironic thing is it was last few minutes of last game of year. Makes me wonder if it did not happen then would it have happen shortly after doing something else???

Basketball too. No brace but I wasn’t wearing my usual baskteball shoes — I was wearing my running shoes. I felt someone’s heel land on the back of my heel and when I went to run forward…POP.

basketball…i came down from a shot at the elbow and went after rebound and that didn’t happen…on my first burst step my left achilles ruptured and i was done after that…it happened in my 4 or 5 pick up game…i had no brace on although i previously fractured a bone in my right foot in track and just came back…the achilles rupture was unfortunate because i didn’t get to run my first year of track at college
