Pop goes the Achilles
Uncategorized May 22nd, 2008Popped my achillles on May 06, 2008 playing……yep….basketball. Drove home, then couldn’t take the pain anymore, so I went to the emergency room and had a “thompson test”. Immediately they knew it was blown. I got pretty lucky in that the ER trauma surgeon for the next couple of days was the ortho surgeon, who does the achilles repair at a rate of about once per week. After about two hours of sitting at the ER, I had surgery scheduled for the next day. Apparently this was pretty good timing. Rupture to Surgery < 20hrs. So, today is day 15 post op. I had a temporary splint removed on day 12 post op, and am supposed to the see the surgeon on June 4. I really hope he puts me in a boot then, so I can take a shower without the bag. I did talk to a guy when I went to get my cast, who had ruptured his in early January and he still had crutches!!!!! I am hoping this is not normal to have to use the crutches this long. I have shared some pics of my last visit, so take a look and comment. Bye for now.

Welcome to this sorry club! You are in good company. I am 3 weeks post op today, on crutches, and my doctor told me I could get rid of the crutches whenever I feel I am ready. I am still using both of them, but I hope to try just one over the holiday weekend. But my injury is to my right leg — won’t be driving for awhile, which is DIFFICULT to adjust to.
I like the pictures, I wish I had taken some to share with my family and friends.

Well it seems like you and I are on the same pace, I had my surgery on May 7th as well. I was in the splint, then cast now and on June 2nd, I go with the boot. I am hoping to be PWB on June 2nd, then to FWB soon after that. Well good luck, we are on the same pace!

I am a fellow basketballer today is my 7th week anvierserary of surgery date. I went from cast to boot after week two. I discussed it with Doc and he explained the boot is ok just need to be careful. Cast gives more margin for error…..boot gives you more freedom (shower, air out leg etc.) but with that comes more chances for error as you must protect the tendon.
I got to fwb around wk 5…..
If it was not memorial weekend and I was not going to the Detroit Pistons game Saturday night and picnic sunday I would go to shoes. But a weekend with plenty of libation means boot outside for me. GO PISTONS!
There are good articles Dennis has listed about studies on the main page.
