Ran Marathon at 18 weeks Post Op
August 14, 2008 by jonas
Just kidding. Thought that it would be a funny post headline. I am doing well. The healing is progressing nicely. Every week seems to bring good progress. I am walking easily, climbing stairs, doing a lot of heal raises, even under extra weight. No pain at all, just still can feel the weakness in my leg. Sometimes I’ll be walking along and forget about me injury and maybe go to hop over a puddle or something and catch myself before I do it…..that’s a little scary. I actually plan on increasing my load on the bike and walking more. By October first I will go for my first run on the road. On September 26th, I have my 6 month post op ( a little early), hopefully the doc will enlighten me with some valuable info for what else lies ahead for me.
Peace
Dude. I almost yelled,”WTF” out loud at work. I was going to be greener than green with envy! I should be running a marathon before you!!
I have my 6 month post-op October 2nd. It will actually 5 months, early for me also. Then I will find out if I can do that marathon, although right now, 45-50 minutes on the elliptical feels like a marathon! I was forbidden to run until that appt. So, until then, i’m a calf raising maniac at the gym, trying help build up that “push”. Somedays I watch in the mirror, some days I don’t cuz its depressing. I’m still trying to get over the “I used to be able to do….” Most of the time i’m ok but some days man….
I know what you mean about jumping a puddle etc. I almost started running up the stairs at work the other day. I’m not sure if it was Jekyll or Hyde that said,”What the hell are you thinking?” I guess this would be one time its ok to have a voice in my head. LOL
Good post — got a laugh.
It is great to be at the point where we forget about our injury, isn’t it? Particularly since it is all we could think about for months. I had a flat tire, and I called my husband who could not come to rescue this damsel in distress. I told him I was going to do it myself — and he reminded me that I had an injury to be careful of!
I started to do it anyways, and much to my astonishment, two good samaritans stopped and helped me. I do not think I could have lifted the full sized tire from the trunk by myself with this leg. Phew.
Anyway - don’t be in a hurry to run. Other things — biking, swimming and elliptical are great for the heart and easier on the tendon. That is what I am telling myself — I plan to give the tendon as much time as possible to get 100%. Look how much running we have ahead of us…..why push it?
My 2 cents!
I was looking forward to reading a kick ass story. By accident I ran about 10 steps a few days ago and that was a marathon for me. Never again though. I hope to go for my first run at 6 months so I’ll be watching your progress for comparison and insight.
Good luck.
Gosh, there was I thinking I was doing quite well just to walk and you were having a laugh, but you obviously got everyones attention.
Good luck with your plans you appear to have it all mapped out.
Annie
Sorry everyone…..I was having a laugh. I thought…”what will get everyone’s attention?” Anyway, you’re right tennisjunkie, no need to push it. I think that I have been fairly conservative and careful. One thing is for certain, I don’t want to do this again.
Hey I notice the SWAT photo at the top. You’re a cop?
I’m with the Sheriff’s Department in Oakland, CA and have tons of questions about “full duty” and when you plan to return to it, etc.
You sound like the recovery is going freat, and that’s awesome man. Keep it up.
