Time for another target…

August 28, 2009 | |

Now my skin infection seems to be clearing so it’s time to start working towards another target.

I don’t think I’m quite going to make the heel raise with 50% body weight by Monday that the PT set me (after all I didn’t do any for a week because of the infection), but I’m slowly getting better.

Sitting on the bike trainer last night, I suddenly found I was able to pedal normally for the first time since my injury. On previous occasions I always found it hard to stop myself doersiflexing on the downstroke,  to the point wher I would overcompensate and roll over the front of the pedal axle. Last night it just clicked, I got on and pedalled and it just worked. Of course I still can’t really stand on the pedal and sprint, but it was the first time I didn’t have to consciously think about my foot position on every pedal stroke.

That got me thinking I’m not so far off riding my road bike after all! I’ll stay on the mountain bike (because of the lwoer gears available) for the next week or two, but watch out, here I come!

So what’s the target you ask?

Mount Wellington, 1270m

Mount Wellington, 1270m

By 3 months post-injury I’m riding up here again!

The second part of the taarget is that I also won’t be waiting at the bus stop (whence I took the picture this morning ) anymore, I’m going to start my short bike commute again soon.

Glad the infection’s going and things are looking up again.
Just wondering how you’ve found walking up hills. I’m due to come out of my cast in 11 days and want to get back to work soon after (only work term-time so haven’t wimped off the whole summer!) but there are a couple of hills between me and and any type of public transport to actually get there.

Very nice goal. It looks like a very nice place to be to rehab and start new. Good luck.

    Hi Sam,
Because I can’t do heel raises yet, walking up hills is a bit slow going - no ‘push’ off the toes. I did find for the first few days in 2 shoes, range of motion was restrictive as well, but by the end of the week my achilles had stretched out enough that this wasn’t a problem.
Using a trekking pole helps too, lets me keep up a more normal gait.
Take it easy and I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Have you actually had a summer this year? I lived in SW England (Exeter) last year and there wasn’t much of a summer to speak of!

    Thanks for the reply Dylan.
No, not much of a summer to speak of really after early hopes in May, perhaps an Indian Summer on its way?
I’ve bought a foldable walking stick which I thought might be useful, but perhaps a trekking pole would be better and more useful in the future when we can (hopefully) get back to doing some proper walking.
My anti-spam word here is “patience” - have needed lots of that and more required yet I think. Won’t rush it.
    Best wishes,
    Sam
