week 8, improvements

Two Shoes Sept 3rd
10th Sept, I bought myself a pair of wedge shoes a bit lower that the ones I’ve been wearing and all is well, kept trying pairs lower than I had till I found a comfortable one(of course the swelling meant I bought wide and cheap because they’ll only ever be worn while my ankle looks like an elephants
)
11th Sept back to physio and a lot more massage and ultra sound a bit sore but you know what they say “no pain no gain” had to get new rubber ends (”fennells” I believe) for the crutches, one had nearly gone through to the metal and made them absolutely lethal in the wet. Local Health Clinic was able to assist in obtaining these.
12th Sept much more confident on the foot, still feels like theres not much movement even when I am doing the exercises with the rubber band but la lot less pain and tightness when I am walking and I can stand for longer because I can put a bit more weight on the foot
Then tonight I discovered two things that sadly made me extremely excited and happy;
1: I although I am not supposed to can now manage to get up and down the stairs with just the banister and no crutches. shhhh don’t tell my physio
2: I also (though not supposed to) discovered that I can do the very wobbly hobble, unaided and with no foot wear for a short distance - only ye fellow sufferers will realise the extent of exhilerating happiness this can cause - side of bed to ensuite!!!

Sept 10th New Shoes
13th Sept, every day is getting better, today I went clothes shopping for the first time since “the incident” and I could use the changing rooms and change clothes easily and carry a basket(again although not supposed to because it meant using only one crutch) while my partner in girly pampering was otherwise engaged. Yeah! Lots of crutching involved which my poor calloused hands could now manage because they and my right foot no longer have to take the full weight of my fairly substantial frame. Yippee!

Good to hear things are looking up. I’m just entering week 8 myself. Today is the day injury happened 8 weeks ago. Wow, if I could only go back in time. Sounds like things are going well. Just don’t push yourself too much. I found today I can walk the hobbly walk with my boot on today but I just don’t want to over do things because any set back would be devastating to me. I hope all stays well with you.

Like the shoes - I have only managed to wear my trainers. It is a good idea to buy some reasonably nice shoes to wear too - perhaps I will treat myself!

Cute shoes!
Take it easy - go gradually with the crutches. Do not let the swelling get out of control.

Thanx to u all, am trying to follow instructions but every now and then u just have to see “what can I do” thanx for the nice comments about my shoes.
Rainbow 395 got them in the sales:) no point spending too much when the foot will have them huge within a week:(
Fitterguy 73 definately don’t want any set backs am still relying on mother in law as chauffeur for school runs etc and as a police officer(Garda) I have to have best use/mobility in the foot or I’d be given confined duty.
2ndtimer by ur name u know all about set backs, Same leg?
I NEVER want to have to go through this again and wouldn’t wish it on an enemy!!

Hi Carol,
Yes it is the same leg. First I ruptured it in February, jumping around in the gym barefoot. For some reason I do not understand, I did not get surgery the first time around. Had the cast for 7 weeks, then the boot with FWB for 4 weeks more. I had a fair bit of swelling, but felt good. Did my physio faithfully. But I had flair ups (never had any issues with my Achilles before the rupture) and the PT said I walked too much. I tried to rest, to ice it, take Advil as anti inflammatory. Then a wrong step (in my bed room! in my slippers, flexing the foot ) at 18 weeks re-ruptured it.
So after 2 times 11 weeks of cast/boot I am worried how weak my leg will be.
I am allowed to ditch the boot after 11 weeks, that will be 7 months from the original injury.
So be careful.

Carol,
I’m into my 8th month since post-op, and so I suggest you do not rush your recovery. Your tendon is still healing, even at 8 months I still feel the tendon/calf is still adjusting and healing. Sorry to sound so direct, but it is extremely important that you don’t over-accelerate the recovery process. The body needs time to heal.
2ndtimer,
When you elected conservative treatment (non-surgical) even at 18 weeks could you tell if the size of the tendon was similar to your good tendon? I’m just curious because I’d like to hear from those who went that route.

Robert,
after the conservative treatment my tendon was never well defined, there was more swelling and scar tissue than after the surgery, and my tendon did not feel as hard as it is now. But I am told it will never again be as thin as the good one.
