Back Ground
My name is Sean Foster and I am 33 years olds. I decided to blog about my Bone Spur Removal Surgery/ATR for 2 reasons. One to keep my mind focused and not got stir crazy. The second reason was in case someone else is out there in the world that is thinking about having the same surgery and needs actual facts from an average person who has gone thru (going thru the process).
First let me start you off with some background:
I started back to running in 2011. My friends Chuck and Sarah had run several half and full marathons and I thought it would be fun to run, get in shape, and get some cool medals. About 2 years ago my buddy Josh came up with the ideal of running a Half Marathon in every state (Crazy I know!). To date I have knocked off 6 states (Ky, Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, and Wisconsin). I have done 2 full marathons and 9 half marathons; along with a variety of 5ks and 10ks.
Over the past 4 or 5 years I starting having heel pain in the LEFT foot. Like any other normal guy I shrugged it off and just ran thru the pain. I would sometimes ice down, do some stretches, take couple rest days but nothing seem to knock it down. The last 2 years the pain started hurting after every long run more and more. I just kept pushing thru. I tried different shoes, socks, tape, braces… nothing worked. A started FOAM rolling and stretching more… nothing. My buddy at church is a PT and he worked on me for 3-4 weeks… nothing. I finally broke down and we to the doctor. He said its just over worked and gave me a Prednisone (steroid pack) for 10 days… MAN did I feel like a NEW man. The problem is you can not live on Prednisone.
This past spring (March 2017) I was training for the Flying PIG in Cincinnati. I decided to go see a chiropractor. They took some X-rays and it was then revealed I had a BONE SPUR on the back of my heel. So being the hard head I am I put my head down and kept training. My doctor gave me another Prednisone pack 10 days out from the race day. I ended up PR the race. It was then I decided to go see a top foot doctor in NKY. I was still training for Wisconsin over the summer in September.
It took 2 months to get in to see him. They took several X-rays and once again it was found…. BONE SPURS. One option: SURGERY. I was crushed. I started researching the surgery and it looked AWFUL, PAINFUL. Doctor said it would be 9-12 months recovery but he was VERY optimistic he could get me back to running. I actually found this website while researching (more on this later). I decided to go ahead and make Wisconsin race in September my last for the year.
After the race, I scheduled the surgery for Friday, October 13. (Yes I know friday the 13th lol)…
