FWB with my boot
August 20, 2013 | |
Meeting with my OS was very uneventful. He took off the cast. Looked over the AT and pronounced that it was healing. No apparent setbacks or issues mentioned. I presented him the vacocast and he adjusted to 25 degrees.
He didn’t provide any written protocol at all. He mentioned something about only do PWB until next week. Then you can go on FWB. Reduce the setting by 5 degrees after 2 weeks. Then you’ll go to neutral. To be honest, it was like Charlie Brown’s mother talking to me. I really can’t be down on him, as this is his training and he knows what he knows. However, it is clearly apparent that he has no knowledge of or has forgotten anything written about rehab and AT ruptures since 2007.
That being said, I will be seeing a PT the week of Labor day. So, all in all, I’m very satisfied about where I’m going. Can’t say enough for this excellent resource. I’d be hanging out to dry if y’all weren’t here to answer my posts and to have provided me with the insights on the rehab process. If anyone is interested, Dr. Glazebrook provided me an updated rehab protocol that isn’t updated on his website. I’ll try to attach or otherwise cut/paste the information if folks want to see it. It will likely be the keystone model, along with a blend of Hillie/Suddsy info and UWO protocols that will guide me the rest of the way. Cheers!

Uneventful is good
Great that you are in a boot and WB. I took my first wedge out after two weeks and then the remaining two at one week intervals. Happy weight bearing.
So how long will you be in the boot for? I am 4 weeks post op. I’m getting my cast changed Friday but I’m pretty sure I have to be in the cast for 2 more weeks before I go to the boot.
I was also going to buy the vacocast also. Do you have any misgivings about buying it? How do you feel? I’ve been in an aircast and hated it so I’m hoping what everyone says is true about the vacocast.
Take Care and congrats on your progress.
I’ve had the vacocast on since Tuesday, and I feel like a new person. Probably, will be in for another 4 weeks, but my OS didn’t give me a written protocol, so I’m not sure what his plan is. That will be 9 weeks post injury/start of treatment…so I should be moving to 2 shoes at that time.
I’ve never, ever worn a cast before, so I can’t compare. But I have absolutely no complaints with vaco and am so glad I ordered it. It is very comfortable both sitting and walking. No pressure points that cause me discomfort. I’m going to a conference this weekend, but Labor Day weekend, I’m looking forward to swimming at the pool, which I haven’t done since July 17. So, for me the vacocast gives me alot more flexibility for quality of life issues, that the other boots may not provide. Good luck, and don’t hesitate to get the boot that you feel will give you the best outcome during rehab and after.
I concur with wilfus, moving from the hard cast to the Vacocast was liberating. Sooo much easier to get around, and the range of motion settings should speed your recovery if you accept the results of the studies that have been posted. I know the ROM is working the tendon as when I change it I can feel the difference for a day or so with s slight burning feeling as the tendon gets stretched a little bit. I would def order the Vacocast if it is an option, SJG.
So my first go round, the day I moved from cast to a boot, (aircast) I reruptured because my wedge wasn’t affixed and it moved under my arch and my heel went down. Bam. So then I had surgery. Now, I have PTSD going into a boot with wedges. The vacocast is the perfect solution.
Do you have to pump anything like you do with the aircast?
Thanks for the info men! xoxo
Hi SJG- I was in a hinged boot and liked the mobility. Make sure you talk to your Doc about when you may take it off and when to adjust the settings.
Wilfus- remember the doc is taking your $. As a customer don’t be shy to call him back to clarify instructions.
Take care all..
With the vacocast you are pumping air out. Very easy to do. 4 or 5 pumps and you are set.
So I saw the doctor today to change my cast and talk about the next phase. I mentioned my PTSD on going back into the boot I re-reruptured in namely because of the wedge. I told him about the Vaco, he said bring it in. I was really hoping he would’ve said, “let me order it for you” for no such luck. I did order it and will be bringing it in 11 days from now when my cast is removed.
He did mention I would be in the boot for 3 weeks. So I would be in 2 shoes at roughly 9 week mark. I’m pretty excited to have it.
Thanks for your info.
How long is the boot on for? I am due for a boot in under a week, and was wondering how long it needs to be on, and if I can drive maybe since it is my right foot.
