Purple foot

Published by vicino813 at 10:08 pm under Uncategorized

It’s been a while since I’ve posted….i guess that means work and graduate school is really keeping me busy!  I’m at a little over 9 weeks…in a boot for a few more weeks but walking short distances without crutches.  PT however won’t start until October.  The scar itself looks great (I can feel a little scar tissue under the skin however).  The tendon is often tight but I’ve taken the wedges out of the boot and i’m close to completely ditching the crutches.

The concern I have lately is the continued discoloration of my bad foot.  After a day at work or not having it elevated for a while my foot turns a nice shade of purple.  Anyone else have this problem this long after surgery?  If so how long did it take to go away.

One thing I did do to past my time is start a red sox/baseball blog….it’s actually caught on in popularity and i’ll be keeping it going….For those of you just dealing with surgery, it’s a good way to keep your mind active/off your injury……feel free to log on and let me know what you think!

Thanks and best of luck to everyone out there!

I had a bruise on my part of my bad foot for about 9 weeks after the surgery. In fact it went away when I started walking around without the aid of the boot and crutches. Perhaps is is related to poor circulation in that area?

Have you tried wearing compression socks to reduce the swelling?

I haven’t tried the compression socks (still in the boot, using the socks they gave me) but the foot will turn a shade of purple without much swelling….obviously it sounds like a circulation issue….just trying to decide if i’m overracting or I should give my doctor a call.

    Hi,

I am 7 weeks 1 day post op and have the same problem with the bad foot. It turns purple. Also, when did you start bearing weight with crutches? Thanks, Sandy

If it turns purple from not elevating then it’s probably a venous return problem, pretty common after ATR surgery. If it stays purple even when elevated then you should check with your doctor. My leg goes a bit red from riding the stationary bike. The compression socks should be fine to wear in the boot.

I’m at 14 weeks today…..my foot also turns purple, but has gotten a lot better in the last couple weeks. It was turning purple whenever I didn’t have my leg elevated, but it seems the more activity, PT, exercise etc. the normal color is coming back slowly but surely. I think that it is just all a part of the circulation getting back to normal. I bet you see a big improvement within a couple weeks…..
