Surgery another week + out??

Published by vicino813 at 3:18 pm under Uncategorized

So after rupturing my Achilles on Saturday morning….seeing about ten different doctors who all “tested” my leg and told me the same thing…i go back into the hospital today to see the surgeon.  He takes off my splint cast, “tests” my leg again (which of course hurts and after which they all say “ah yes this is a classic Achilles rupture”), schedules me for a surgery for next Tuesday, and then has me put back in a splint cast.

Anyone else run into this same problem?  I was told this morning on the phone that they might take me into surgery today….only to learn that it’ll be another week plus before I go under the knife…so much for getting right on the path of recovery.

When I was at the ER, they happened to catch the orthopedic surgeon on his way out. (Monday) He set up an appt for me two days later. (Wednesday) then said,”What are you doing Tuesday. So, it was 8 days before I had surgery. Well worth the wait though! My surgeon was/is awesome.

if you read some of the links - i know some doctors want to do surgery about 10-12 days after injury. im not sure if the healing ends are easier to approximate than when it is acute .

they had me wait just short of two weeks for surgery b/c of one thing or another… First to see surgeon… Then MRI, then dr appt to look at MRI….mishap of no MRI showing up so yet another appt. Then had to schedule surgery. I was in splint and crutches the whole time. U can probably press them or use a different surgeon…I wanted to stick with mine so just had to b patient. And I know ALL u want to do is get busy on recovery. I’m VERY active and not so good at this patience stuff. Hang in there… I still saw/will see my trainer everyday for workouts and I’m eating carefully…. I’m determined not to get out of the great shape I was in pre injury. ‘nough bout me. Keep us in the loop… kk

As long as surgery is within 2-3 weeks of injury, my understanding is that you are ok. DISCLAIMER - I AM NOT A DOCTOR. I know it feels like forever to wait, but hang in there.

I met with the ortho 2 days after my ER visit, to be told he was leaving in the morning for a week in Florida. After what I’m sure was a quivering lip and the threat of tears, he had me come back in 2 hours for surgery. I figure my surgery just about paid for his vacation, so no sympathy.

The best part was not having the anticipation time… It was 2 hours from the time my doc asked when the last time I’d eaten was and being wheeled to surgery, so I missed that part. I’m sure it sucks! But honestly, this whole thing is a very, very long haul. A couple weeks here or there is small potatoes.

I recommend lots of guilty pleasure movies and ice cream.
