Week 7 Update and Research Questions

Week 7 can be summarized pretty quickly.  Exact same experience with rehab and I’m pushing to get into two shoes.  I pretty much only have the boot on while out in public.  I’m also supposed to get an AchilloTrain in the mail today.  Anyone have experience with one of these.  I figured it couldn’t hurt since i have very low swelling but haven’t been given heel wedges by my doc (bc i don’t see him again until July 29th).

Anyway, I’ve been filling my time doing some research on some rehab methods.  Here’s my list of interests:

Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber - getting massage and doing exercise in the chamber may speed recovery. Used by Donovan Bailey and Trace Armstrong.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Replacement Therapy - Uses your own blood and increases red blood cell count (so more oxygen).  Some NFL players have used this to recover from injuries

Graston Technique Deep Tissue Massage - targets scar tissue but may be too imbrasive for ruptured ATs

Active Release Massage - jam a finger on the scar tissue and then flex the afflicted area

I really wish i heard about the hyperbaric and PRP treatment options earlier.  I probably would have given my body up in the name of science.  Donovan Bailey supposedly returned to running striders on the track in just 10 weeks.  I guess returning was his only job though…and he had a big bank account.

Any thoughts?

The plasma replacement therapy sounds interesting. The question is where would you find a place that does this and how much? Seems like you would have to get a referral from your doc to get it covered under insurance.

Not much to add but I have not heard of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber. Thanks for the reference.

I mean not heard of massage and exercise in the chamber.

Pittbull, me again. I am right at the beginning of my reading on this. I read the Oxygen chamber has been successful with some hypoxic and ischaemic wounds but read somewhere the O2 may increase release of free radicals. I could find randomised control trials in neuro rehabilitation. couldn’t fnd any in sports injuries?looks like Armstrong must have been able to afford his own chamber. I also read Tiger Woods possibly had this therapy and PRP treatment on his achilles. He looks pretty mobile to me.

I mean he looks pretty mobile in comparison to me. Not difficult.

Hey Ali,

Seems you kind of echo my detail seeking brain when I hear of new things. I swear I should own a part of google with all the searches i do.

I believe Armstrong had access to a large 12 person chamber in a training facility in Arizona. I believe Donovan Bailey went to the same facility during rehab.

These two really stuck out to me because they returned to the highest level of competition after their injuries. Armstrong made a comeback to the NFL. Bailey is probably the only human being to run a sub 10 second 100m dash after a rupture. They obviously were doing something right (and had some genetic blessing as well).

Do you work in the heatlh/medical field? I’ve found one study on the PRP that said it did not significantly impact recovery from tendinopathy. Haven’t had much luck finding others specific to ATRs.

From your blog, it seems like being laid up is taxing on you too. I’ve also read that it is very important for someone who was active before injury to continue to exercise the rest of his/her body. This has great physical and mental benefits.

Cheers

Good morning family! Lol! Today I am celebrating the 2 week mark…quite exciting I tell ya. It has gone by fast, considering there has been a whole lot of down time. I am trying to help the wife, who has picked up my load of responsibilities. She has been amazing, tho there are highs and lows. Thankfully we are teachers and have the summers off. I guess this summer is a wash though. We do gave a trip to Antigua coming up in August so I am looking forward to that. Nothing like healing in the tropics! Have a great day everyone…just checkin in. You guys are awesome!

You are right. I have just started getting back to the gym. I think they felt a bit sorry for me and let me in for free yesterday!. Before this I had problems even getting to the front door.
I had months of various treatments before surgery, including steroid injection into the left fascia for plantar fasciitis.
I did read quite a bit about PRP at the time.
I am an occupational therapist. I have to be quick on my feet so before the surgery I had to be office based. I don’t work in orthopaedics, so most of this stuff is new to me.
Anyway, direct me to the nearest oxygen chamber!!!!
I love the exchange of ideas on the blog and find there is always something new to read about.
It just seems so slow but we will all get there in the end.
