Surgery July 6th
I ruptured my rt Achilles on June 28th playing softball. Very freak play. I reached up for the line drive and felt like I got shot. I felt and heard the pop. Went to ER and they drugged me up and casted me up so I could be seen by ortho surgeon the next day. We did an MRI that day but couldn’t get back together until July 2nd. The MRI confirmed the tear. Surgery seemed like the best option due to recovery times and less chance for it to rerupture. I’m fairly athletic at 44 as I just ran my 1st 5K. I had 2 others lined up plus a 10k in the fall.
Any good feedback would help to keep my thoughts as elevated as possible. Thanks

Hang in there Troy. Don’t be a hero. Take your pain medication and stay ahead of the pain after surgery. The first 3-4 days can be tough. This site is a great recovery resource but at the same time can be frustrating if you feel that people are ahead of you in progress so don’t over do it with the blogging
Good luck tomorrow. Praying for a good recovery for you. Let us know how you are doing from time to time.

Thanks. My wife is an RN and will be helping. She has been a great help. This site will be my daylight when the times are rough
Troy, check my blog (achillesblog.com/skutr). My wifes an RN too and her experience in wound care and pain management was very helpful. There’s really nothing you can do for the first week or so except be very, very careful and try to be as comfortable as possible. Get a couple of BIG ice packs.
Im 45 yrs old and very athletic (2nd degree black belt) and next to listening to your wife, I believe the most important thing to do is stay positive and try to do one new thing every day. In the beginning the new things will be small but over time they will get bigger.
Thanks Scott for the positivity! I defer to my wife in these areas as she knows best.

Troy,
I’m just a week ahead of you. Every new day is a better day. You’ll feel less pain and experience progress. Like everyone is saying, listen to the doc and be a good patient.
Some good things; socks will last longer as you only wear one, arms will see growth with use of your new best friend - crutches, other leg will become stronger, many great looking women hold a door open for you, better parking spots, and free parking with pass while parked at a meter. Does it get any better?
Good Luck and Fast Healing

Thanks for the comments. Unfortunately mine is the rt foot so with the boot I’m unable to drive. I have several bad days lately. Maybe I overdid it. I had an ace bandage underneath and when I unwrapped it the pain was unreal
I had reduced the drugs as I kept up right away and started reducing but that didn’t work so I had to increase lately. 8 weeks to being out of the boot. Hopefully. My goal is to do a 5k in late October. Not looking for a fast time. Just finish. Gotta have a goal!
