Went to see the Doctor last Thursday for what was to be the last followup from the surgery. The doc looked at the abscess and said "I want to get that opened up, in the OR." Not news I really wanted to hear, but better to be safe than sorry. So Monday, they put me under, and reopened the old incision and abscess. While in there, they looked at the tendon, which has completely healed, and also found what they think might have been causing the infections. They were coming from the inside out. The sutures in the tendon were rubbing against the inside of my heel. So they removed those and stitched me back up. I am back on crutches and no weight bearing for 2 weeks, but hopefully they got everything figured out.
Another procedure

Almost exactly what I experienced. I think you’ll be amazed at how quickly you heal up now that the internal sutures are gone. I felt much better even before the doc removed the sutures from the last surgery because I no longer had the stabbing pains in my ankle where the internal suture knot was. Good luck, you’re on your way to healing now.
I’m sorry I didn’t see your previous post. If I had I would have said you need to have the internal sutures removed. You were experiencing the same thing I went through, almost exactly.

You guys seem like 2 peas in a pod, alright. I bet Gerry his last surgery would make him very happy, and I’m placing the same bet on you, Tom.
So let me get this straight: I really don’t think ATR people should get surgery, but if you get ONE, you may as well get TWO. . .?!?
BTW, Gerry, you confused me for a minute with your “I felt much better even before the doc removed the sutures from the last surgery because I no longer had the stabbing pains in my ankle where the internal suture knot was.” Then I figured out that you meant “before he removed the EXTERNAL sutures”, and it made perfect sense.

It is actually feeling much much better. Still not allowed to return to work till i see the doctor on Thursday, which is a real bummer. It puts me at 5 weeks total over the 2 surgeries missing work. It has taken a pretty big emotional toll on me. Doesnt help much when you are just coming off a divorce right before you get hurt.

Hang in there Tom. It might not seem like it right now, but time does heal ALL wounds.
We are all pulling for you.

Doug is right. It does eventually get better. Today I skied a black bump run that I wasn’t even too crazy about before my ATR. Last winter I was beginning to wonder if I would ever really get back to skiing. I’m back with a vengeance. LOL
Norm, I understand why that was confusing. I should have worded it better.

Thanks guys,
I know it will get better. Just can get frustrating at times. I know it is a serious injury, and it takes a long time to get over. Hopefully now that they found the root of the infections, that it will heal quicker and i can get back onto the road to a full recovery. I really miss playing hockey.
One sidebar from the surgery. The nerve block didnt work so well. Was in a lot of pain after the surgery, and they accidentally gave me 2x dose of painkiller in recovery. gave me 2 shots of painkiller because it wasnt working, only to find out my IV line was kinked. I wasnt in pain for long after both doses got pushed thru the IV. lol.
