Showering with a cast?
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas/suggestions on showering with a cast on the lower leg or ankle. I’ll be having my surgery on the 21st and could be in a cast for 2-6 weeks depending on how extensive the damage is.
Thanks for any assistance

I used a white kitchen garbage bag. Taped around the leg, above the cast. Folded the bag over the tape line. And then taped again, to form a seal. Then, I could go fully into the shower, and never had a problem with it getting wet.
I used a step stool to sit on, and a hand held shower head/wand. I also found I could stand, on my good leg, using the heel of my injured leg to support myself on the same stool.
Getting into and (especially, because it’s wet) out of the shower is maybe the most difficult part. To get out, I’d kneel on the stool, walk (heel-toe-heel-toe) my good foot over to the edge of the shower door, grab my crutches, and then pop over the “door jam”, onto the safety of the non-slip carpet.
You have an advantage over most, in that you can practice this routine a few times (before the 21st), and figure out what you might need. For instance, it would have been nice to have an extra long hose on my shower head. And, you can go shop for a perfect stool to use. You can stock up on bags and water-proof tape. etc.

I used this trick from my orthopedic surgeon…Rubber band or bungee a hand towel (folded) just above the top of the cast. Then use a kitchen trashbag to cover the cast, rubber band or bungee it above the towel and fold the bag down. If any water does get past the top of the bag the towel takes care of it. I used this with my pre and post-op splint and never had any issues with dampness (although at 6′4″ it took almost the full length of the bag to cover my splint).
I am lucky because I have a stand up shower with a small seat that I can use to sit down and don’t have to climb over the side of a tub. I did us a stool in the shower to prop my foot up in the week or so after my surgery.
I think you (we) need to be very careful with showering, but once I got the routine down I was able to get my splint ‘prepped’ within a minute or so.
Good luck with your recovery…

I bought a cast protector from amazon.com for $20 and it is awesome. Fits right over your entire cast and waterproof. Might look like a leg condom but it is definitely worth it.

Late in my first ATR recovery (I’ve done both sides), I bought 2 fancy “cast protectors”, but the 2nd time I just used black plastic garbage bags. I had some Spandex-and-Velcro bands I’d bought from the Dollar Store that were just the right size to secure the top. I did include some “chamois” or microfiber cloths to sop up any seepage, but they almost always came out bone dry. I was lucky to start with a “phone shower” on a vertical sliding rail, so I could adjust it way down low — where I was, sitting on a short stool (with some “ensolite” closed-cell foam on top).
I switched between sitting and kneeling half-way through the shower, so I could reach everything and not shoot water straight at the top of the garbage bag.
It worked well, but it was still a huge step forward when I was cleared to take the boot off and wash both legs. Kind of like moving to 2 shoes several weeks later, it was a “big but scary” move forward. No distractions, and Watch Your Step!!

All of the above is great advice.
My biggest advice, I always took a shower when my husband was here. Just in case I needed help.
I had a chair in the shower and a chair outside the shower.

I used a cast cover from Walmart - pack of 2 for $14, only had to use one because they are reusable, worked great. Also used a chair in the shower, I used the knee walker, could get from it to chair in shower with no help and back out again. My Dr. took me out of the cast and put me in a boot, after the stitches were removed at 2 weeks I was allowed to shower and get the incision wet, so did not have to use the cast cover for too long. Was the same for both surgeries.
