Week 11 - wearing boots but not shoes

I’ve just come back from physio with a gold star and yet more exercises, now doing slow lunges, and more calf raises. She also tried to get me standing on the bad leg, which was VERY difficult, mind you I’ve never been very good at that. I’m a bit dyspraxic which is probably how I fell off the kerb and did my AT in the first place.
I’m now allowed to try driving up and down the drive, though not out on the open road.
The swimming is going well, I’m up to 500m, and it really loosens up my AT, I definitely recommend it.
I have also been advised to ditch the boot and just wear normal footwear, tell the truth I haven’t got on with it that well, I find it puts a strain on my knee, and it’s not training me to walk normally.
The only thing is, the back of my ankle is very sensitive, and I can’t wear any shoes, not even trainers. I’m using crocs and knee high boots. Are there any other
surgical people out there that have experienced the same? If so, how long does it last?

Hi Teresa
Can’t help with the shoe issue but wanted to say well done on the swimming, glad you are there and enjoying it. Its funny how different things scare different people.

You do need to get comfortable without the boot though. One of hte first exercises i was given was to stand in bare feet and just shift your weight back and forward for a minute or two. Easier than balancing. I do remember I was scared at that point (9 weeks?) to even put weight on it barefoot.

I’m a rubbish swimmer and don’t really enjoy it but the pool therapy has been great. I do 500m aqua jogging and (currently) 300m with a flutterboard wow that gives you a leg workout. Itas getting easier so must be getting some muscle ;)

Just wanted to say well done for all your great progress at the PT and with your recovery over all, I am very impressed at what you can do at week 11.

Hi Teresa,

I’m interested to hear what solution you found for shoes. What are the parameters re/heel height? What about flats? What’s working for you? Thanks…
