Hey Tara,
There are a lot of variables and no golden rule. I think most people would say its simply when you feel comfortable enough that you are not putting yourself or other drivers at risk. For me (also right ATR), I first drove around the neighborhood at 6 weeks in my wife’s automatic. I then practiced driving around suburban neighborhoods a good few days before I jumped back into rush hour traffic. The very first time I drove, I could easily ‘drive’ but knew if I had to make a split second decision and slam on my brakes I might be in trouble, so I waited a bit until my calf felt stronger. After about a week back into rush hour driving, I felt confident enough to start driving my manual again.

I had my first physio appointment yesterday and asked her the same question. Her answer was “Thats a legal question, your doctor has to clear you to drive”. I actually never thought of that … could this be an insurance issue? If I try to drive to early and something happens … could insurance wash their hands?
Anyone done research on this?

As stated above I think it is all when you feel comfortable driving. I started driving to work 6 days after surgery every day left footed. It was a bit weird at first getting the feel of the gas pedal and brake pedal with my left foot. After a couple days it was nothing. If you have a manual tranny this would all be a totally different story. Good Luck!

Tara, you are right to talk through with your doc.
The driver needs to be able to do an emergency stop and the Doc will advise when this is safe.
There is a guideline in the UK DVLAataglance.
