1 Week in…

I had an appointment with my consultant / surgeon today. Having spent a week in a partial cast (front slab) he had a good prod and poke around my achilles and calf… and said that I don’t need to go down the surgical route!

This was good news as when I was assessed last week it was possible to insert a finger into the break in my tendon so I was convinced that surgery was likely.

I’m now facing the next 3 weeks in today’s cast which is (thankfully) a lightweight one, but no surgery :-)

  1. Sound great! The people in this community who have taken the conservative approach (no surgery) seem so far to have excellent results. One regular commentator, who’s had both approaches, also has a lot of research data and other info about the conservative approach. So wishing you the best with it, and a quick and full recovery!

  2. Most non-ops here have done fine, some haven’t — something like the post-ops here. I’ve posted a LOT on the topic. Try hard to get a boot, and to follow a modern fast protocol, which clearly gives better results than “your father’s conservative casting”. PT & exercise & PWB start after only 2 weeks of NWB immobization in my fave protocol, from the UWO study. bit.ly/UWOProtocol should get you to the successful schedule. Going slower seems to increase reruptures, not to mention the nuisance!!

  3. Normofthenorth - I’m well aware of your blog and spent a happy day reading it end to end the other day! There is a wealth of advice out there and I am looking to buy a boot and will do my utmost to persuade the NHS to let me use it. The consultant I soke to yesterday was not keen on me using one too soon but I am going to try and persuade them to let me use one when this cast comes off in 3 weeks. That will be 4 post rupture…

  4. Nice. Me, I’d confront my Docs with the UWO study, it’s fast protocol, & it’s excellent results. Maybe ask your Docs if their results are better! If so, they should publish them; if not, they should follow the leader.

  5. Hi, I will follow your progress with interest and good luck to you also. My surgeon told me he intended to get me into a boot at 2 weeks 5 minutes before they put me under, but I guess that depends what he found when he sliced and diced me! Either way, I believe the overall timescales are similar on average, I just look forward to getting back towards normality. I plan on going to Classic Le Mans in July, my surgeon said ‘no problem’, but time will tell!!

  6. I went to le mans last year (3rd time) and walked for miles…
I was thinking of classic le mans this year but had already discounted it. What car were you planning on going in?
You sound as though you have a much more modern thinking surgeon.

  7. I have been trying to find a Facebook page or yahoo group of folks with achilles repair to ask some questions…but didn’t find. I am a week shy of 3 months since surgery, and was not prepared AT ALL to still be in this much pain and limping. Am in 2 shoes, but only those with zero back (clogs). Can’t even have a small lip on the back, like Nike tennis shoe I just spent a lot on. Feel like the ankle joint is catching and the worst is a lump and pain right on the inside of the heel - so have no idea what that is. Hopefully can find others in reading these blogs with same struggle.

  8. @fjordmom58,
This is a community of amazing people helping and supporting one another. In addition, a few of the contributors have done exhaustive research and have a wealth of knowledge and experience.
You are in the right place to ask questions and share your story. If you create a blog, we can follow your progress.

  9. I will wait and see how I go on next week at my follow up, I guess forward thinking is good, forward ‘doing’ might not happen but most NHS ATR recovery guidelines I have found say they aim for a boot post op at 2 weeks and a boot non op at 4 weeks. Le Mans, I have a mate with an old 1967 Land Rover, short wheel base, with a V8 in so we cruise down in that and spend some money on petrol. We go with a group of old sports cars (Healey’s, Morgans etc.), about 7 in total, we usually end up towing one of them at some point! Lots of walking, that is my worry also but let’s see how it goes between now and then. It is good to have a goal in this process, that is mine.

  10. Sounds fantastic :-)
Be careful of all the walking. Is it worth taking a bike? Might make it less stressful on your recovering achilles.
