Why did it happen?

Why did it happen? This is a question I will be forever asking myself….. Some thoughts and ideas:

1) As my foot doctor pointed out and we both knew and had discussed already, there is a lot going on with my left ankle, you can read about it here. My doctor said the probability of this happening because of the other ankle issues was pretty high. Basically my anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments are much looser than they should be, you can see them below.  Ankle instability definitely strains the Achilles.

2) Skechers ShapeUps - I hate to put a product through a witch hunt it never deserved or asked for, but I have to wonder about it.  Due to my previous ankle issues (probably the main problem more than anything else), I’d gotten a pair of Skechers ShapeUps while in Las Vegas and having to do a lot of walking.  They made my “bum” ankle feel good.  A little Google searching found some correlation, cause or effect I don’t know, but I doubt I’ll be wearing them again.  It’s a shame really as casual business shoes which are comfortable are rather hard to come by.  But, improper footwear also strains the Achilles.

3) The classic Achilles tear scenario is a 30-something male, weekend warrior, recent increase in activity.  I tore it while playing work softball.  I was in better shape this year than I had been in probably 5 years, and had been stretching more.  However, I rarely ever “limbered up”, which is something I’ll definitely be doing in the future.
