6 week checkup and the Ferrari of walking boots
Today I had my 6-week checkup and I got the Ferrari of walking boots, the VacoCast. I can’t tell you how much more amazing this is over the crappy walking boot you normally get, and just another example of my doctor going above and beyond. The comfort level is great, how natural it feels walking is great, just overall it’s awesome. I still have crutches, but my doc said to ditch them as soon as possible, but be smart about it.
For my reference, I need to leave the VacoCast at the setting the doctor first set for 2 weeks. At which point I can start moving it further and further for forward range of motion, gradually over the remaining two weeks to my 10 week checkup.
The doctor says he sees a lot of Achilles cases and that my recovery has been one of the best he’s seen, which is nice to hear. My range of motion is great, the swelling is almost non-existent, and the incisions look awesome. Overall I have little pain beyond slight discomfort and tightness, the anatomical shape of the Achilles tendon is near perfect, and strength in my calf has returned nicely just by doing toe raises gently in a chair.
At this point I’m cleared to walk in the boot, ride a recumbent (ouch), and go swimming. All with the expectation that I’m being smart about it and not doing anything powerful.
