happiness = wearing a complete pair of shoes

today marks a new milestone: goodbye boot, hello shoes!  it is both liberating and frustrating at the same time.  it is liberating to get the 5-pound godforsaken apparatus off of my leg (…yet i am thankful that modern science has enabled us to have things like this).  it is also frustratingly deceiving as even though i am wearing two shoes and look somewhat normal, i know i am not.  “dah-dum, dah-dum, dah-dum, dah-dum” is the all-too familiar sound of my footsteps.  at least people know i’m coming.   :)

a few uncomfortable pings are keeping me at the slow, yet steady pace.  i’m not quite sure what i am feeling.  perhaps it is due to the fact that i have been off of my leg for quite some time.  i’m sure that with pt i will gain the strength and rom to begin to walk normally soon.  aah patience!

for those not yet back in your shoes - the time will come!

best wishes everyone :)

  1. Congrats! Enjoy this milestone.

  2. Hi,
congratualtions! I will be wearing 2 shows next week, do you have any advise on what to expect? I am really scared my foot still feels a lot sore and weak. I hate and love my aircast boot at the same time since I feel protected of anything hitting my foot you know what I mean. Well enjoy your recovery and I hope I hear from you soon

  3. hi there :)

only 2 weeks left? congrats! advice…well, i can share my experience thus far…

my foot was swollen the first day, so i was a bit uncomfortable at first shoving my fat foot into a shoe.

i was very nervous taking my first step in a shoe that i used my crutches at first for extra support. after a few steps with crutches around my apartment, i ditched them and began to walk verrrry slow by myself. indeed it was frightening. my ankles felt like spaghetti, as my muscles have atrophied greatly. it’s day 2 now for me in 2 shoes and already i can see my calf muscle begin to gain strength.

be careful on uneven surfaces and on stairs. i live on the 2nd story, so i take my sweet time going up and down stairs. also, i find it a lot more difficult to walk uphill.

lastly, be prepared to walk with a significant limp for a bit. time management is your friend :) i have to add an extra 5 or so minutes to my travel time just getting from car to doorstep, etc.

just take your time and enjoy the feeling of wearing 2 shoes again! good luck!
