I just want to walk!

September 18th, 2009

Nothing fancy you understand.  Just stand up on two legs and walk across the room.  Still getting around downstairs on my wheely chair which is infinitely better than crutching, but I’m not even one third of the way through my predicted cast time and I’m bored of sitting down. Don’t know when I’ll be able to PWB but it’s a way off however I try to frame it in my mind.  Will never take basic walking for granted again!

Off to a Christening in Wiltshire this weekend which I’m really looking forward to, but it is going to be hard work! And I’ll have to go easy on the champagne.  Ventured out last week and came within a hairs breadth of sticking a crutch down a drain!!!  (One of the big ones on the side of the road) Imagine how much of me I could have broken like that!

    This too will pass…..
You could always hire a wheelchair for the weekend and too much champagne might not be so much of an issue - mind you I guess it would depend who you managed to get to help push! Enjoy anyway :)

As others have said, we’ve all been there and it will pass, probably already has…
It’s a bit of a rollercoaster the whole way through as you realise how far you’ve gone and how far is still to go. But you’ll come through it.
    Enjoy your weekend,

Smoley, I actually have the feeling the first weeks are harder, than the last: the end seems so far. The more time goes by, the more I got used to the new state of affairs.
But you are nearly over that part, hard to believe, but looking back, it won’t be that long.
Take it easy, just try to enjoy a bit of a break - it won’t last.
Yeah we will never take walking for granted - for a while at least.

Dear feedme, rainbow, sam and 2nd timer,
Many thanks for all the support. I’m back to hospital for next cast change tommorrow which will feel like another hurdle cleared. Had a great weekend, am obviously building up the shoulders because I crutched all the way up and down Marlborough high street and in and out of the shops without aching! Bummer is that nearly every night I dream that it has miraculously fixed itself and I’m fine, so every morning I wake up and…..b*&$%£@s!!!

Glad you enjoyed your weekend. Yes, all the way through you keep hoping this is just some bad dream and you’re going to wake up and everything’s back to normal.
Good luck with tomorrow’s cast change - a chance to have a look at the scar and reassure yourself all is well there.

    Hi Smoley
Am I right in saying you are 5 weeks this Friday, If you are that is a big step. I remember feeling much better at 5 weeks. I too had a great weekend, and have not turned my laptop on since last week.
I had an appointment at the hospital today, and I go into trainers tomorrow, poot. I am bricking it a little, as my foot is very wobbly still.
When You have your cast change tomorrow, are they going to change the angle of your foot? If you are 5 weeks, they may bring your foot up a little. let us know how you get on.

seconds on knowing the frustration - while being driven to an appointment, I kept pointing to people out jogging and saying “I used to be able to do that”. I’m surprised that my kids’ nanny (who was driving) didn’t kick me out of the car.

2nd cast change was pretty uneventful, didn’t see consultant, just the plaster room ladies, but they seem to know their job very well. Gutted to see how skinny my calf looks after only 3 weeks (have always considered my calves to be my best bit), goodness knows what it’ll be like after another 4 or 5. Gave it a very tentative wiggle. Scar okay but a bit “ruched” or crinkled. They brought my foot round a bit and I could feel the stretch in the tendon, so it is in one piece at least! Hubby assures me that calf will come back. That’s easy for him to say!

Hey Lee - Afraid I’m not 5 weeks yet, op was on 31 Aug so 3 weeks yesterday. They did bring my foot round a bit but now the cast doesn’t look or feel any different to previous so not sure if it didn’t relax back down again! Good luck with the trainers. I sometimes imagine that moment when the PT first says “Okay take a few steps” - it’s got to feel pretty wierd! My hip and knee are complaining occasionally now, probably wondering what the hell is going on!

You Tube suggestion for the sofa-bound: Went out last night in Cambridge to see Tim Minchin (Aussie singer/comedian) absolutley brill and well worth the pallaver of having to crutch all the way to the highest/furthest back seats! Anyway, there’s loads of Tim on YouTube if you are mucking around on the lap top. I’d recommend “If I Didn’t Have You” as a good place to start. Enjoy!
