A Day of Firsts

In my last post I said that I try to do one new thing everyday.  I did enough new things for the first time in 7 weeks yesterday that I should be good for a week.

Yesterday was the first time I carried groceries up the stairs for the first time without using the handrail.  I also cleaned the inside of my Dad’s van.  That may not sound very exciting, but it was the first time in a VERY long time the inside of his van has been clean.  He’ll probably get better gas mileage because I vacuumed & washed several pounds of dirt out of it.

Yesterday was also the first time in 7 weeks that I actually felt like I did something useful at home instead of sitting on the couch. And that my friends is a very important first in my recovery.

Awesome, Scott! It makes a huge difference to feel useful, doesn’t it?

I agree with the useful part. I’m folding clothes on the sofa for my kids since they’re doing nearly everything else. I’ve also been able to sit and read aloud more with my newly adopted girls from China - I’m not “too busy” anymore. Even the neighborhood kid thinks its great to have a captive audience (me) to just listen. :). I’m realizing how much I missed by my inability to be still. This is a great time to catch up with friends as well.

totally understand the “useful” part too ~ If you take it easy, it will only get better from now on :)

Nice! But stay “incremental” with your AT challenges!
