Got my boot for a second time yey!

Hi all,

16 days post op for re rupture. Last time was in a cast 6 weeks. Same doc and it went something like this…

Me, “why did I have to have a tendon graft?” Doc, “because even in full plantar flexion there was a 5 mm gap, I didn’t want scar tissue in the gap I wanted healthy tendon so I did the graft.”

Me, ” Does it affect my rehab?” Doc, “No, same time same protocol.” Me, “Good, then that means I can go into my boot then, today!”

He says we’ll see when we take a look at things. My plaster came off, the hairy twig was exposed and even thinner, yuk! The wound looked smoother than I thought and the stitches had dissolved. Lot of bruising, not much swelling. I had managed to elevate loads thanks to my mum staying to help.

He moved the angle of my foot up towards neutral a tad and asked me how it felt. Fine no pain. He said boot then with 4 heel wedges. I couldn’t believe it. He argued with me last time and put me back into a cast at week 4. Maybe he felt sorry for me and my re rupture.

I can sleep without the boot but PWB only for the next two weeks. He was adament about that. Crutches. I didn’t FWB until week 6 last time. I have to massage the wound and only shower it for now. No soaking it the bath for obvious infection reasons. I just took off my boot sock and scrubbed my foot and leg three times….bliss!

I can ROM movements and please can all you post oppers tell me what you were doing PT wise at home on day 16. I need your advice please.

I am actually feeling happy today for the first time in 16 days!

Happy healing all.

Bit of advice please about tendon grafts.

Hi all,

seeing doc for first time Wednesday and I’m going to try to get into my boot. Will be 16 days post op for re rupture. Does anyone out there know if having had a tendon graft from my big toe will make any difference to the rehab time? Want to be advised before I stand my ground so to speak….

How long do you wear compression socks for?

Hi all,

eleven days post op for Re rupture…boy it’s dragging more this time! How long did you guys wear compression socks (I should say sock) for? I only had blood thinners for one week too, is that normal? Thought everyone else seemed to have a much longer supply.

Anyone else heard of PRP?

Hi all,

been reading Arielvit’s post. Has anyone else heard of PRP injections. also he was walking FWB in an aircast after one week… Jeez what is going on here? I want to know why we are ALL not offered this stuff?

One week post op for re rupture

Hi all,

nothing much to report. Feels OK. Bit gripey. Keeping it up as much as possible. Off the pain killers completely now, don’t feel I need them. Have an appointment on the 26th September, week Wednesday, can’t wait. Frustrated at having to go through this boring procedure again….

Surgery for Re rupture…

Hi all,

I’m four days post op and I needed a tendon graft…not exactly sure why as I can’t remember what the surgeon said to me as I was on morphine….Will find out why when I go for my first visit. Took two hours though. He did say dorsi flexion would be difficult to get back. Great! I’m guessing my repair is short already. Two weeks in this cast and then stitches out. I am injecting blood thinners and only taking pain killers at night now. Had volterol but it really upset my stomach so knocked that on the head. Think he said cast for another two weeks and then in into the boot at four weeks. I’m not going to fight for a boot at two weeks but I will at four if he mentions another cast. I’m not doing more than four weeks in a cast but to be honest I don’t fancy sleeping in my boot at two weeks…we will see.

Surgery for Re rupture Monday Morning

Hi All,

I’m having surgery on Monday. Not at my local hospital and not free…..they simply could not give me a date and they say although I’m urgent I am not an emergency and that is that…. Not prepared to wait anymore and I get my guy who I trust.

Can I get as many post op tips from you guys please? I’m having a general. My hubbie says it would stress me out too much to be awake and although a general scares me I think he’s right. He also said I would annoy my surgeon talking all the time….that is true! I am hoping for no complications, what with my luck!

No holiday for us next year……

UK guys, how long did you wait for surgery?

Hi all,

my guy couldn’t do it yesterday so now I wait for a call. Spoke to his secretary who said there was a crisis at the hospital, shortage of beds and anaesthetists…great. My doc said clinically it wouldn’t make any difference and to walk in the boot or even in trainers with heel wedges in? My calf in the meantime shrinks to nothing. I am totally on edge waiting for the phone to ring. My doc said it is important to get the right person to do it. Is he just waiting for a bed? NHS it is such a post code lottery…

Any UK people, how long did you wait for surgery once your rupture was diagnosed? I was confirmed this Monday but re ruptured nearly two weeks ago……..I have a horrible feeling I will be spending yet another weekend not knowing what is happening. I think I am going to scream. Hopefully the phone will ring today. I don’t want to annoy his secretary by constant ringing. She did say that he had asked to have my notes put straight back onto his desk yesterday so he could “think” about it further. What the h*** does that mean?

Confirmed re rupture

Hi all,

had my MRI and it shows a re rupture. Weirdly the tendon still has fibres attached all the way around but a gaping hole in the middle. My guy said if it was his tendon he would have done exactly as I have, non op first but now he totally recommends surgery. I await the call. He may not be able to do it as I am going for NHS as we self funded the non op route but he said one of his team will so I have to be happy with that. He said don’t eat breakfast tomorrow as there is the tiniest chance HE could do it tomorrow but doubtful, with my luck I am not holding my breath………..

MRI scan for re rupture Monday

Hi all,

got my scan through, Monday at 8.55. My doctor is back next week too so will see him. So so confusing. Saw an ortho surgeon on Tuesday who said he thought I DIDN’T have a total re rupture and told me to go home and put my trainers on. I didn’t I put my boot on. My thoughts being it needs help. But like I said I’m NOT convinced it hasn’t gone altogether so if it has walking in my boot is doing NO good and as Norm says, probably leaves me opting for surgery as I may well be weight bearing on a full ATR. what do you do listen to an ortho surgeon or listen to yourself? I can walk on it but haven’t really dared, but then again I know people on this blog who walked for three weeks or more before being diagnosed so that means diddly squat. I can do seated calf raises but does that mean anything at all? I’m not too sure, thoughts if anyone has any on that. Norm has said to have a go at walking up stairs, which I was doing before but by putting my whole foot on the stair never just the ball of my foot so not entirley sure what you mean there Norm really? Was out most of the day in my boot yesterday and my ankle was sore last night in bed and my calf still feels like it has been kicked by a horse so all in all I have very little hope. Oh and there is a gap, it doesn’t feel very mushy inside that gap but there is one. I wonder what my doc will say to his colleague ( the one I saw Tuesday as they know each other) if he has misdiagnosed my re rupture and told me to go home and walk in it? Not much I guess, it’s my leg after all not his ……Oh that sounds a bit bitter doesn’t it? Well I will be bitter if he has totally got it wrong and screwed up my recovery…..
