Sore big toe!

Hi All,

does anyone else get a sore big toe in their boot? I had a word with the physio and she said it is where the tendon from there has not worked in weeks and is now feeling it. My boot isn’t rubbing there at all but it doesn’t half hurt sometimes! It is the very top of the whole toe.

  1. I think we’re using different boots, but I don’t have any issues with my toes.

But walking the way I was instructed to for these first two weeks, my boot gives my heel a right clattering and I found very little cushioning inside the boot (the soft sock and 6mm of neorpene just is not enough) I now use an old tea-towel (sorry wifey) to absorb the shock, and it works really well.

  2. Sheena– not sure if your problem is the same as mine, but sounds like it was caused by the same thing. My Ortho and PT also think it’s from having been “not working” for so long.

That big toe problem has been my hinderance since I started FWB in the boot! It was so bad I couldn’t get off the crutches until I started PT and they massged and manipulated the joint. I’m 14.5 weeks post now, in 2 shoes, and I STILL have nasty soreness in the big toe joint :(
Gout was ruled out. I do have Rheumatiod Arthritis, so that might be a bit of the problem. My pain started with just the top and bottom of the big toe joint, then the pain spread across the whole top of my foot at the base of all the toes and the top of my foot for a few weeks.
The PT’s work the heck out of it 2x’s a week and now the pain is just underneath the base of the toe joint and only when I put pressure on it, like walking (and making calf raises impossible!)

The only suggestion I have it to keep doing your ROM exercises and use your thumbs to massage the top of your foot from the ankle to the toes, and the underside of your foot from the whole arch, across the underparts of your toes and into the bottom of your heel. I was also told to do “scrunches” with my toes all through the day, and roll a ball under my arch. Ice helps, I actually ice my toe joint more than my AT!
