If you want to reduce the scar get some silicon sheets or gel. Silicon is the only verified way to reduce the look of scars. I used it on my heel and am using it on 2 scars from skin cancer spots.
And if you want to play basketball do! You’re too young to not be doing more aerobic exercising I’m back to playing soccer and doing all my exercise classes and I’m over twice your age - LOL!
If you want to reduce your scar use silicone gel sheet. It takes quite a while but it will reduce the scar. It’s the only tested/verified way to reduce scars.
My doctor said use the silicone gel or sheets once things are all healed up. I started using the gel on the top half of my incision at 4 weeks and on the lower half at 5 weeks (other than one little portion that took a LONG time to heal up). At 6 weeks I started putting on the silicone sheet. You just stick it on. The flattening occurs naturally. I take it off to wash it and do my exercises/massaging 2x/day and one other part of the day to do my exercises/massaging again. If you weren’t told to do scar mobilisation (aka massage) then start doing that as well. I was told to do that, gently, once the sutures were out. As soon as I started walking I got some lumps under the incision which I assume are scar tissue so now those get a bit more vigorous massage
I’ve heard of coconut oil as a DIY scar treatment, but its effects have not been proven or disproven, as far as I know. If anything, it seems to help moisturize and facilitate healing. I think the silicon sheets will work better if you also apply constant pressure to flatten the scar…You should ask your surgeon what’s allowed at this point.
Hi! I’m only 3 months post op. At what point do you become less susceptible to swelling after use? Is it at 4-5 months, or just happens whenever you increase the load? I can understand soreness after exercise, but hoping the swelling part will eventually stop at some point…
Silicone gel sheets are a proven way to reduce scars. I got some on amazon both a gel and the sheets (kelo-cote). While the scar was still pretty tender, but still healed, I used the gel. Once it got less tender (last week) I started putting the sheet on. I’m at 7.5 weeks. You pay about $35-$40 for a sheet and cut off what you need. You use the same piece for a month - taking it off, washing it and putting it back on twice a day. The gel costs just a bit less - but you just apply a thin coat so it lasts a while. I found a blog post on it by a guy who got a bad cut under his eye while surfing. It showed the before and after and talked about what he did (keeping the scar out of the sun is also very important) and how it worked.
I’m a believer in accupuncture. It was the only thing that helped my IT band even going to various Dr and PT’s. I’m only 3 weeks into my rupture, but my Dr. said it can help with recovry.
I think yeah it’s basically the western name for acupuncture. My girlfriend swears it’s the only thing that helps her back/hip pain but when I had it done on my tight calves (some years before rupture) it just felt really tense for the next few hours. Personally I think it’s mostly placebo!
I’m at week 14. The protruding scar does slowly start to go away. Hang in there
Yes. This persists a year in for me but has gotten much better. What helped me was constant stretching. Those supporting ligaments definitely tighten up being in the cast. Every now and then I get a very relieving “pop” in the front ankle when I try to get maximum stretch while trying to slowly go up all the way on my toes. Feels wonderful after and the ankle is much looser. Keep at the stretching.
I had ankle pains at various stages of my recovery. Not soreness but sharp stabbing (medial side both below and in front of the ankle bone). They were pretty frequent when going down stairs on the balls of my feet, but I’d also get them randomly when just walking around.
When I first got out of the boot, I think my calf/achilles was weak and I was compensating with other muscles, which was affecting my gait. I found making a concious effort to use the calf helped.
Later when I started playing sports again, the weakened support muscles were getting tight and affecting ankle function. Stretching took care of the problem.

Hi all
No noticeable swelling when I came out of boot (week 10) but since then (week 12 now) after walking or stretching exercises I have swelling in both ankles. Still walking with a limp but improving. The physio seems to be slow but to be honest I can see why - every time I think I can do a bit more I overdo it and feel like I am going backwards!
Vietzy I agree about doctors/checking injury. Only physio has given any really useful info/feedback.
Tried to do heel raises at physio today - can barely get heels off floor - and now achilles really sore.. and first day back at work tomorrow! It’s a slow process….
Happy new year to everyone.
Hi there, me too - just out of the boot. I came out at 9 weeks and it’s 10weeks tomorrow since the injury. I’ve been walking around pretty much constantly but with a heavy limp and today is v swollen but reckon thats due to the 1st day back at work. Off to see the physio tomorrow - cannot wait as I’m so looking forward to someone actually examining my injury site properly. Here in the UK it seems to be a case of ‘follow the protocol written down on the bit of paper’ and don’t use your brain to be honest. There wasn’t any checking of the site by touch or any real discusson, by the doctor, I was pretty much just todl to wait to see the physio. I’m still waiting to get a NHS appointment to come through but I didn’t want to wait more than 1 week, so have made a private appt.
Congratulations on booting the boot. That’s very exciting step! Try compression socks for swelling. That is normal at that stage. Of course elevation and icing help, but I found that it was best to minimize swelling in the first place by wearing compression sock (knee high). If you were op, then check with your doc/pt if it is ok with your scar to start wearing one.
With walking - try to not to develop limp but take small steps and roll foot from heel to toe. My PT actually recorded my walk when I got out of the boot and in slow motion pointed out corrections I needed to make to my gait. One step at the time! Good luck!
I got mine on Amazon. I highly recommend the socks regardless of which ones you choose. They really help
CEP Compression makes some great stuff that I use. They are medical grade but look like nice athletic wear. They are very tough to get on so you have to be really careful about getting around your heal and up your calf. I am 3 weeks post surgery and go to PT twice a week where they keep my foot and ankle loose with some easy massage and motion.
I also wear ski socks made by Smart Wool that are great as well. The compression really does help with swelling and pain. You just need to be careful getting them on.
I was just told to take Aspirin twice daily. I just started to walk in the boot today and continue to take it at least once a day. When I went to my post op appointment I had asked if if still need to take it and they said yes.
Schwarac - were you prescribed any blood thinning medication to prevent DVT/PE after your surgery?
