Hi,
I am Sally Colella, 52 years old and I fully ruptured my Achilles at the heel jumping into a burpee at Crossfit a week ago. I heard a pop and was pretty sure what had happened. I have not had much pain.
My husband, Carlo, took me directly to ER and I then I went to Ortho’s office in Bethesda, Maryland. Surgery Thursday. I am in a splint and if all goes well will graduate to "bubble boot" next week.
Trying to balance both acceptance of my new reality and the temporary loss of mobility with doing everything I can to stay fit and regain my former level of activity. My family has a ski trip to Italy planned in December so I have a big incentive to stay healthy.
In terms of mindfulness/acceptance, I have been reading the book True Refuge by Tara Brach, a meditation teacher here in the DC area. This has been so comforting and practical.
On the active front, today I went to my Crossfit gym and my trainer rigged a rowing machine (erg) so I can use it by resting one foot on the sliding seat of a second erg. I erged from 20 minutes and my average split was under 3 minutes. Definitely got my heart/lungs working. I also did weighted ab mat sit ups with a 12k kettle bell and so exercises with bands. Finally, one legged push ups.
I found it really uplifting to be exercising with others and great music.
