Achilles Recovery Italian Style

February 15, 2014 · 5 Comments

I reached my goal of skiing December 22-28, a little before I hit the 5 month mark. I had to take it easy - turns with my left foot downhill felt a bit unstable. Definitely felt high speed turns were out. Really enjoyed the hot chocolate (heavy on the chocolate and cream with no yucky sugar powder). It was great to be out on the slopes in Italy with my family. Nothing beats bombing down the mountain but the relaxed approach has a silver lining!

Following this victory I relaxed to much. I kept going to crossfit a few times a week and graduated from PT appointments but did not keep up my daily at home PT regimen.

My recovery stalled and my limp came back - especially in stiffer boots. I am back to heel lifts, massage, balancing on my left foot and jumping every day. What a difference. I also had a Reiki session that really seemed to help. I am trying accupuncture next week - will keep you posted.

I did run two miles a few weeks ago and signed up for a sprint tri September 7 - so I have a goal.

Fascinating! Many folks hereabouts say that progress only comes with hard steady work, but you are the first I can recall who actually went backwards while just being active. My own impression was that normal ADLs and “tincture of time” kept my leg improving, and progressing to more and more strenuous activities, whether I was good or bad. I guess that’s just one more area where we’re all different.

Backsliding was an exaggeration. I leveled off.

Limping in stiff boots seems odd. Do they bother your scar? Can you figure out WHY or HOW the boots cause harm?

I skied a smidge sooner than you (17 weeks), non-op, and I blasted down the slopes at Whistler, groomed and un. I literally felt safer (AT-wise) on the slopes than in the village! The boot reminded me of my orthotic boot, protective and supportive. Hmmm.

“My recovery stalled and my limp came back” was an exaggeration? No shame in sharing a problem — especially if we can help!

Ooh, I gasped at the photo. So pretty! Skiing at five months is pretty awesome. I don’t know that I would have been ready–physically or mentally. I’m sure your CF and PT got you to that point! Glad to hear that you are back in your PT routine. I know all about plateaus. It’s easy to back off when you feel like you are getting back to normal. We’ve had some “inclement” (by CA standards) weather lately and I’ve been a little complacent myself. You are reminding me to get going again.

Great to hear from you Sally!
