About
My name is Ryan. I live in Utah, near Salt Lake City. I was 46 when I injured my Achilles.
I’ve always been active: weightlifting, bicycle riding/racing, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, and - for the last few years - speedskating.
After a hard summer of training, I was in the best shape I’d been in for quite a while, and was getting ready for the upcoming racing season. I was practicing starts, doing (running) sprints up a hill- from a standing start - with a weight vest on. I simply overloaded the Achilles tendon, suffering a complete rupture (right side) on Aug 24, 2011.
After hanging out here on the Achillesblog site for a while, I’ve concluded that I have a slightly unique definition of recovery. I won’t be happy if I can “just” skate, worry free, with 100% effort. I’ll only call myself recovered if/when, that effort yields racing times comparable to my pre-injury performance. This perspective has led me to a fairly aggressive rehab path: I’ve had a very low tolerance for atrophy, or loss of strength and fitness. I know that every little bit I lose will make my battle back that much harder.

In addition to the blog entries, I’ve been keeping a daily log of my rehab activities. You can check it out here.
