Happy days are almost back again

My re-rupture was only partial but was told it was only hanging on by a small piece of tendon and that it would take 8-12 weeks to heal. Had my follow up session today.

Surprise, surprise, the foot looked ok! No swelling to speak off, not particularly tender, no black patch by the ankle. I even responded well to the Symmonds test. In fact I was healed :-). The main surgeon had a look at it and the scans and was happy to put me in a walking caste for 2 weeks.

What a difference 2 weeks can make.  I would have seen  anyone asking for money I would  have given them everythign in my wallet, I was that happy.

Been agonising of whether I should have gone for an operation after the re-rupture, but so far looks liek the conservative treatment was the best.

Re-rupture

So, I originally ruptured my Achilles on Friday 13 March this year, while playing football. In the end I treated it conservatively for eight weeks. Healed quite nicely and I did physio for one month - conscientously doing my excersises - and was almost walking normally.

Had a few pints after work on Thursday, just stepped off the bus and was walking home, stepped on a metal plate, heard the dreadful snap and felt my foot dissappearing below me. That was two minutes from my house. Ended up spending the night in the hospital as nil by mouth nursing my hangover and waiting for an operation.

After 15 hours, luckily no longer nil by mouth, the scan showed that a stubborn piece of tendon was hanging in a thin piece of thread. The third hospital doctor I saw thought a conservative treatment was the best.

Now waiting for my follow up appointment next week.

Unlike the first time I’m used to life on crutches and can quite readly cope with everyday life. However, mentally it is a lot lot tougher this time around. Been some dark moments, when it dawned on me that  would have to spend the summer in plaster. Had been so happy that I was getting back to normal.

My main worries are I’m 33 and was in reasonably good shape when it ruptured the first time. How weak is that damn tendon? Will I ever be able to play football again? Will it rupture a third time?

Also every doctor and physo give me different information. Who should I put my trust in so it doesn’t happen again? The only reliable info I’ve been given are from the small but fine team at the plaster room. (One of them had been working there 25 years and had only seen re-rupures less than 10 times - lucky me.) However, hard to be happy with a system and health professionals you don’t feel confident with. Tried both the NHS and private.

On the bright side I will have some more time to read the books I didn’t get around reading the last time.
