Three Dr. visits in one week

Posted in Uncategorized on February 1, 2012 by rosethorn

Well, just four days after a post-op check-up, I went to the office again yesterday. This was due to the "tails" of my dissolving stitches deciding they didn’t want to dissolve. I now have several little ulcerated spots where they pushed themselves out and there are indications of more to come.

My doctors threatened to put me back in a cast for a week to stave the chance of infection and further wound complication. I wasn’t having that. Thankfully, they are willing to work with a bull-headed lady such as myself.

I am not directed to put anything on the wounds except heat. Lots and lots of heat–to the effect of eight hot compresses per day to promote circulation and healing, much like a cast would do. I also walked out of the office after one of my doctors placed a single band-aid on my leg, giggling as I went. We went from a cast to a single band-aid :)

I have to return on Friday to check out the "progress" and there’s still a chance they’ll stick me back in a cast, if it hasn’t improved. Please keep your fingers crossed!

7 1/2 week post-op update

Well, I was (not so) secretly hoping to ditch these sticks at this appointment but my doctors are adamant about keeping me on the strictest of time lines, what with my “history” and all.

So I’m stuck with crutches for one more month while I remove my three wedges, gradually… Then, I will be FWB! Man, what can I do to make this time go faster?

Also, some of the ends of my dissolving stitches are starting to poke out. Has this been a normal occurrence for anyone else?

First day back to the gym!

Yay! I finally mustered up the courage to set foot (just one) in a gym again after some soul-searching. What a relief! I used the arm ergometer, pedaling with my arms, for 45 minutes and was able to get some real cardio in for the first time in eight months! I feel energized and much more in control than I have in a long time.

Surgery picture #3

I call this photo “after.” I’m all cleaned up and ready to be closed. I found the most dramatic effect was in looking at the difference between photos 1 and 3. Plus, look at the circumference of that thing!

This photo shows the extra length of my “new” tendon to compensate for my heavily atrophied calf (from two prior ruptures). Check out the stitching on that thing! My reinforced tendon also contains a section of a hamstring muscle for added strength. My doctors stated that once full vascularity returns, this tendon will be more than twice as strong as the one I was born with.

I refer to this picture as “before.” All of that knobby whitish melee is the remarkably thick scar tissue matrix that had been holding my tendon together. The tweezers are holding onto what is the distal end of my tendon. The proximal end is not visible due to the scar tissue and the heavy recession associated with an atrophied calf. The piece they’re getting ready to stitch in is a cadaver tendon, flipped upside down (to reinforce the distal end).

Etiquette about surgery pictures…?

I have a few pictures from my operation, with my leg opened up and think it would be cool to post them for you all to see. Is it inappropriate to put them right on my page? Should I host them first then post a link? Let me know because they sure are something to see!

After reading many posts about shoe complications and discomfort with surgical wounds, I ordered myself an ergonomic and very stylish pair of Merrell slip on boots! I’m gonna’ come back in style, for sure :)

34 weeks and no one cares

I started this blog in hopes of getting some communication about my situation and I’ve yet to get any input. I’m going to continue to post and try this out for a little longer but to be quite honest, I’m disappointed. My situation is unique and awful and despite my efforts to establish communication on this blog, no one seems to have anything to say to me. I guess that’s okay. I’ve started to get used to disappointment.

New year, new beginnings?

Started a juice fast today… Thought it might be a positive thing to refresh my system after seven months of dealing with constant pain and inconvenience, as well as undoing my habit of coping by means of the bottle more than I probably should.
