3 Years !!
As it says 3 years on Saturday since it all went tits up achilles wise. No more Rugby for me but I can do most other things now. I still have a stiff ankle joint first thing in he morning and a bit of tendonitis in my ‘good’ ankle which eases fairly quickly once I get moving. Apart from that life’s good - big hello to all my Achilles contempories I still have a read from time to time and it would be nice to hear how the class of 08 are getting on.

It is very encouraging to hear from someone that has gone through all this already!
I would like to ask you if you think one never comes back to be a 100% normal after this injury?

richard - glad to hear back from you. Time really flies after the first couple of months, eh?
My 3rd year anniversary came and went, and my Achilles is doing okay. It’s not perfect, but good enough. I play basketball once or twice a week, and I bike to work 2-3 times a week.
I had planned on running the nyc marathon last year, but had to postpone it until this year. I’ll be running the nyc marathon for sure this year. I’ve started my training.. although a bit slowly, but I’ll get there.

Hi Richard and Dennis, gone past my 3 year anniversary now (April 2008), and each time I walk on the same spot where it happened (car park) I wince… Still not fully recovered and doubt I ever will but as a pensioner who wants to be able to run, play badminton, or tennis etc… but never mind I can walk!!
Season now upon us Richard, noticed your Leeds won today!!

Thanks Dennis - you must be amazed at how this site has developed. I still check in for a read now and again and I’ll post stuff now and again. Still in touch with a few achilles mates off site mainly mickey taking and GB vs USA jokes.

Difficult one to answer that one. It’s a combination of the physical and the mental that contribute and I reckon it’s harder for those who were more active to get back to 100% (age as well!). There’s more success stories on here than negative so that augurs well.

It’s three years for me, too, Richard, and I’m back driving tourbuses and limos like a madwoman around the San Francisco Bay Area this year. We’re packed with foreigners taking advantage of the cheap dollar, so I’m trying to take advantage of them.
But here’s my story: both ankles now do hurt sometimes in the tendons, not in the Achilles, but lower down and sideways. Finally, I had a Russian fellow as a tourist, former ballet dancer of the Bolshoi, who asked why I wanted to cut a hike short in the redwoods. I claimed my feet hurt, which was true, but also, I wanted to get back to the bus and make some phone calls.
We got to talking. He had become a physical therapist, from necessity, as injuries are par for the course in the performing arts world. Since childhood ballet dancers like him were trained in caring for joints and tendons as part of their education. He asked a lot about my ATR, seemed alarmed at the lack of proper physical therapy.
His diagnosis: since my right Achilles’ tendon did not get fixed properly through therapy, it has weakened the leg. It therefore transfers weight to the good tendon, and thus misaligns that leg’s tendons as well as the bad tendon’s. If I did not go and get therapy and proper exercises, he claimed, it would get steadily worse and make walking very difficult in the future.
I am of the opinion that he is partially right, but also, that I have some arthritis in the joints, certainly in the knees, and that extra weight has put too much stress on all the tendons.
My main focus lately is not so much as more exercise as losing weight permanently, and just to see if that helps for starters. Slow going, of course.
I don’t run anywhere, I just walk.
