The worst day of my life - 27th January 2013
On the 27th January I was competing in the Watford Open National kickboxing competition. I only had 2 fights to do. During the first fight about 1 minute in, I felt the tendon snap and I knew it was bad. I was screaming ‘I’ve snapped my tendon’ because somehow I just knew. I have never been so upset in my life (I am such a wimp). After I calmed down and my foot was up with an ice pack on it. The medics told me it hadn’t snapped because I wouldn’t be able to walk on it. I was really relieved. BUT after a while knew it didn’t feel right. I was a long away from home it was late and I had to drive home people home. As I was driving the tired came off my car. Spark flew, I managed to pull over but it was dangerous to wait for the RAC in the car so we had to climb up a grassy hill. We waited for ages for the car to be fixed. Luckily a passing friend took us to McDonald’s to wait. Somehow we were laughing. I though, at least I am alive. At least I can walk. It can’t be that bad.
The next day I went to work. I was crying on the way to work, not so much the pain but how wrong everything felt and how people were staring at me. I got to work. I did half a day and then decided I needed to go to hospital. Even though annoyingly some else decided to tell me it wasn’t ruptured because they said it would have sounded like a bullet. It is amazing how many people try and tell you what is wrong or isn’t wrong with you. Luckily when I rang my mum and I told her I wanted to go to A and E she took me seriously and offered to take me. I felt really silly going to A and E. I though they would laugh at me and I felt ridiculous asking at the reception desk if someone could take a look at my ankle. The doctor immediately knew what was wrong with me. Thank you Kingston Hospital. I was plastered immediately. Another doctor took a look and confirmed there was a gap.
I was worried about not having surgery but I have to trust the doctors. I am sure they know what is best. The last thing I want is an infection and with early mobilization I have very similar recover chances as someone who has had surgery. I have very little pain. I expect that is to come when I start the physio. Thanks for your support and comments.
