Moon boots today!
Well, 4 weeks after ‘the incident’ have transferred from cast to moon boot today following conservative treatment. I must say the cast seemed a lot more comfortable but I guess I will get used to it. Still not weight bearing but am supposed to remove 3 or 4 times a day and exercise my foot for 5 minutes by pointing and flexing. It feels quite stiff but the range of motion is not much different to my good foot so am quite hopeful all is mending well. Has anyone any experience of any complementary therapies that have helped as well? I have been taking so herbal tissue repair tonic and homeopathic remedies, has anyone tried anything to help?

Good luck with the boot. I’m 4 weeks post-op and still over 5 weeks left in the cast. Wish there was some way of knowing what the best regime really is. Would also be interested in any complementary therapies people have tried.

Well done you, and I love the fact that you are looking at complimentary stuff too, every little helps. I was very concerend about how many people on here just seem to have surgery straight away, and I was taken down the conservative route, but I’m so glad we did. The complications I’ve read about are awful, and very frequent. Believe me it’s worth all the frustration of immobility, hang in there chuck! It will get better from now, once you get used to the boot you’ll be flying, I miss the security of mine now.
Gosh you are far from home aren’t you, all the way down under. I don’t know Gosport that well as I’ve just moved to Portsmouth, but I love the weather, the sea and the people, my colleagues at work have been very supportive.
I’ll keep an eye on you rainbow, you look after yourself now, and don’t run before you can walk (please pardon the pun, I just can’t help myself)

I was put in the boot yesterday, and I am 6 weeks post op. My doc told me to stretch my foot in a hot bath 2x a day. I can walk on boot, but it still hurts and I need crutches. Good luck.

Hi there,
From what I can tell there does not seem to be a “best” regime, although it does seem from the more recent studies that early mobilisation is good. It really depends on the doctors and the healthcare system you are in. There seems to be research that indicates the rerupture rate is slightly higher with conservative treatment but after a year the outcomes are much the same. I don’t think I will risk playing squash for a little while! Personally I am adverse to hospitals and operations having had some unpleasant experiences in the past so am hoping the conservative route will work - do doubt time will tell!! Complementary therapies I have used have been to take homeopathic remedies: arnica initially then ruta grav almost daily since, have also taken the Artemis tinture for muscle and tendon sprain - it contains comfrey, st john’s wort, rue and arnica. Am also trying Bowen therapy, but have not had that before so cannot really comment on it’s effectiveness yet. In the past I have used cranial osteopathy and accupunture and I would have considered them now but there are no good practitioners near where I currently live. But gosh 9 weeks in a cast - how are you coping? Mind you I did find the cast much easier to sleep in - this boot is really tricky in bed and my sleep is suffering. Anyway, take care, best wishes, Sharon

I wish I could run! We have sheep and children to chase here and it is all getting out of control! It is good to hear conservative route stories as the operation definitely seems to be the norm - no doubt time will tell. Have found the boot tricky in bed and getting a bit more pain (haven’t had much at all before) am hoping it is because the nerves are healing - or is that just being optimistic! Still not weight bearing but am stretching a few times a day and movement is getting better and easier.
I bet Portsmouth is great at the moment - my dad sails from Gosport isn’t Cows week on - quite a buzzy time to be there - we are hoping to make a trip back next year - we haven’t been back for 5 years.
Hope all keeps going well with you, take care

Hi Sharon,
Thanks for the info on the complemetary therapies you’ve tried. Nearly half-way through the 9 weeks in the cast, tough psychologically but trying to be patient and looking forward to getting past the half-way mark. Bit worried about the lack of mobilisation for so long - will blog later - kids driving me mad this morning!
