Update 4.5 months

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 4:06 am on Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Hey guys!

Sorry it’s been a while…. But who would know how quickly life would commence being hectic again!! I’m 4.5 months post and each day gets easier and easier. I have started driving again, back in the gym, managing full work days. I am doing double calf raises (not at a single yet) and almost walking without a limp (seems so hard to move past this). It still feels tight and a tad sore to walk.

Overall things are improving and am feeling free and much happier. It’s still hard work but nothing like those first three month!!

To all of you just beginning, stay strong! There is light at the end of the tunnel!!

12 week update

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 5:06 am on Saturday, September 21, 2013

I’m almost at week 12 post op now and seeing some good progress. Finally I can walk without my crutches  in bare feet  and shoes ! I did have to buy some new work shoes as none of my shoes fit my fat foot! I found some comfortable work shoes which have been ok.

I went to pool for first time today and I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed swimming so much. I could only manage breaststroke but at least I got some exercise. And I did all my new exercises in the pool which was so much better than struggling at home.

I am still getting some pain when walking and my calf strength is poor. But slowly getting there.

Have been pretty emotional this week, I think everything is just catching up on me. Funny that I’m making more progress but also crying more ha ha!

Getting lots of sewing done, that’s always good :)

Sleeping soundly tonight

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 7:06 am on Thursday, September 12, 2013

Tonight I’m sleeping without my boot!!

Went to physio tonight, 10 weeks 3 days and I took my first step/limp without my boot!! Have been given new weight bearing exercises out of boot, and can now get on the bike!! So excited.

I am surprised at how much easier it is to put weight through my leg than I first thought but still very cautious, I’m so hesitant in case I rerupture! I think I’ve been the opposite of most and over cautious.

I wonder what runners people have chosen as a good option as I think I will buy some new shoes.

I will still be in boot for work, but crutches and 2 shoes at home. I see the light!!!

8 week update… Crutches blues

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 2:53 am on Sunday, August 25, 2013

Hi all!

I will be 8 weeks post surgery tomorrow (9 weeks post injury). It feels like the last two months have crawled  by like a snail. 9 weeks of crutches and lost independence is starting to take its toll.

I am officially full weight bear now, however I can’t seem to kick these crutches. I’m not sure if it’s strength, confidence or what. I have tried one crutch ( on opposite side), I’m doing my hip exercises (as well as calf and achilles). I still have my vacoped fixed now a 0 degrees.

Im starting to get so frustrated that I can’t walk without my crutches and I wonder what others expereriences are transitioning from crutches to walking. I’ve been trying for about 10 days. Physio says I need to bd patient, but I’m concerned I’m going to slow and am too protective.

On the upside, I’m back at work full time, showering by myself with boot off, sleeping a little better, swelling is getting better and going to physio and masseuse each week.

Ive learnt a lot about myself and also myself as a health professional. I think I will have an absolute new empathy for my patients with a new understanding of pain, frustration, social isolation, loss of independence, and recovery.

6 week review: black cloud lifting

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 6:25 am on Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Hi all,

I’m now 6 weeks post AT repair and had my second follow up today, with lots of positives from my surgeon!! I’m so excited to be fully weight bear as tolerated, but remain in vacoped for another 4 weeks. I start physio tomorrow and can take my boot off to shower!! I’m allowed to start riding a bike!! I can go back to work full time!! Suddenly a big black cloud has lifted and the sun is shining through!

I’m so excited to get off these crutches very soon and regain some independence. I’m sure my partner is also, poor thing!!

Anyway that’s all, wanted to share my excitement at some progress and a change in mood!!

DVT scare

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 9:55 am on Sunday, July 28, 2013

Hello all,

Well I am experiencing my first actual admission to hospital with a possible DVT. I noticed some new calf pain, tightness above my incision site and increased swelling last night. I thought it might just be due to having my leg down a bit more, but didn’t want to risk it.

Came to emergency and Doctors cannot rule out DVT and so here I am admitted until I can have ultra sound tomorrow and had my first clexane shot (ouch!!).

I wonder what others experiences have been with DVT scares/ diagnosis. I’m only 30 and have been taking asprin so I’m hoping I’m just being silly. Fingers crossed!

Vacoped today….cold toes!!!

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 1:37 am on Wednesday, July 17, 2013

Hi all, had my first follow up today 2.5 weeks post surgery. All is going very well, had my stitches removed (and an almost fainting episode due to some pain on removal as the would had closed over them) and to my delight they have put me into a vacoped. I was hoping for a vacocast….but is there a big difference? It is so much more comfortable than that awful plaster cast!

Only thing is we are in the middle of winter and I can’t get a sock over the end of the vacoped and i have extremely cold toes and I’m not allowed to take it off. Any suggestions to warm up my tootsies??

Also my scar is off to the side, most others I have seen have been right over the Achilles. Do others have the same?

Touch weight near for 2 weeks then PWB for another 2 before my next appointment. One hurdle down! Thank goodness those stitches are out!!

2 weeks post surgery

Filed under: Uncategorized — purple at 2:19 am on Monday, July 15, 2013

Hi all,

Im new to the site, am exactly 2 weeks post surgery today and have my first follow up on Wednesday. I can’t wait to get out of this uncomfortable cast and find out my plan from here.

Just wanted to say hello and to say how useful this site has been so far! It’s been a long two weeks and I’ve had so many questions that you have helped me with.

I have been reading the posts about others experiences and positives that they have taken from their ATR. So far I think I have just been so incredibly gratefully for my beautiful family and friends and feel so lucky to have such wonderful people in my life! I’d be lost without them!!
