Update
Well i went to a foot and ankle specialist the other day. He feels i need to wait and see what happens. He said its salvage surgery if i need another surgery. He said he feels the tendon might be tore but the wrap the doctor put around tendon still seems to be intact. So there is a chance that the tendon will be held together with scar tissue. As bad this sounds he said much better than the surgery. He feels its about 50 50 if my achilles will heal. He said i should get going on physical therapy and see what happens. Needless to say i went and got a second opinion and he said he feels that doctor is on the right track and had nothing but good to say about the foot and ankle specialist. So i am going to start therapy on Monday and see what happens.
If i have to get another surgery. What they do is cut a hole in the arch of your foot and cut the tendon that goes to big toe. It runs down the inside of your achilles and runs to big toe. Once they cut that tendon they drill a hole in your ankle and run it through that. Then back up the other side of your achilles. So now you have to small tendons acting like an achilles. Doctor said he has a man in his forties he did this surgery for and he plays racket ball a couple of days a week. So only time will tell!

My surgery date is this coming Wednesday and the procedure you spoke of where they use the tendon going to the big toe is the one they are going to use on me to start with. While my achilles has not ruptured yet, the MRI showed the damage to my tendon to be extensive. My surgeon says he has done about 200 of this type of surgery and has only had 3 that didn’t fully recover. I am glad you have written that you might have to have this procedure as I was beginning to wonder if my surgeon was off base. I have read most all of the blogs and no one else has described theirs like this.
I can hardly believe you have a friend who plays racquetball. I was playing 3 days a week at a highly competitive level and the surgeon told me it would be best if I never played that or tennis again after the surgery. That gives me great hope.
Hang in there. I know how hard it is to go from being super active to brought to a sudden halt. My anti spam word to post this comment was positive. Stay positive. We will all get through this I’m sure!
