This damn single leg calf raise!!!

How long until any of you were able to do a full single leg calf raise on the repaired leg? I mean a good one without holding on to anything where one could cheat. I can get about an inch off the ground and it is infuriating me.

on a good note I got up to kirkwood for two more ski days last weekend and took my Bike out for a rip yesterday. Also knocked out some plyrometrics on the legs…but WHERE IS MY SINGLE CALF RAISE!! :-)

2 more ski days under my belt!

Went up on Saturday and Sunday with my 6 year old and got in full days without issue. Saturday was a blast…20 inches of fresh pow awaited our arrival with light snow flurries. Sunday was a bluebird day. Saturday in the pow gave my legs a good workout. I thought my daughter would be wiped since she moved up to 100cm skis for the first time but no…I need to find a way to bottle that childhood exuberance…I could solve any energy crisis! Heading back up this Sat and Sunday as well. (supposed to be 2-3 more feet of the good stuff) Trying for Friday as well but this damn job thing is getting in the way.
In the interim I keep trying to knock out as many 1 legged squats as I can, getting quite low now. The one legged calf raise , albeit closer, is still not happening.

++++vibes to all my fellow ATR victims out there!!!

well here goes nothing!!

I am at 17 weeks post-op today. Been working the hell out of my AT without issue so I am planning to head to Kirkwood tomorrow to see how this thing responds to some skiing. If all goes well going back up for the weekend to ski with my daughter. I will post back with the good or bad news.
Nervous and excited about this but I plan to play it safe and stick to the corduroy

Latest Dr’s Visit…Great News!

So I saw my Doc yesterday and he said things are progressing uber-well. He indicated that I am past the point where I could do damage to the repair so its full steam ahead on rehab.  I found that what Physical Therapy puts me through can be done on my own without having to schlep to the PT center. I just need to keep an eye on any potential swelling as a sign that I am overdoing it. My doc is fine with this approach The best news of the day is I have the OK to get back on my Mountain Bike and progress as I am able. There is a nice little 13 mile flat loop around the lake right outside my office. Perfect lunch time ride.  I also have the go ahead to go skiing at the end of the month as long as I am smart about it (no backcountry or bumps, just groomers…not my normal ski day but better than not going at all) I plan to go on the 27th…that will be 17weeks 4 days post op.

My 6 year old is stoked to get back on the slopes …already making fun of me since we have to stay on the mellow stuff!

My Doc is there if I need him but no new appointments are needed unless I have a setback

All in all a great day!

calf pain in the good leg

Has anyone experienced tightness in their good leg during recovery? I have been making an effort to take care of it (stretching, etc..)

I was wondering if this is a result of picking up the slack for the injured leg.

Officially in two shoes

How sweet it is! I abandoned the boot on Saturday morning (1/30) and went outside to work in the yard and see what limitations this new wheel has. I quickly realized to doc was messing with me when he said no calf raises on the repaired leg…its not even an option! No calf muscle, no response! Going up and down stairs is an odd sensation since I can’t push off the ball of my foot but I am getting used to it. Planning to hit Rehab hard now that the boot is gone and I have plans to ski by the end of the month. Looks like that will just be an alpine adventure. I don’t think my AT will allow any action on the telly’s!

Great feeling throwing the air boots in the trash!

Back to two shoes by the end of the month!!

Emailed my Doc to see if I can abandon the boot by the end of the month as planned even though I don’t have another appt until 2/10. He indicated that I can based on where I am with PT. Riding the stationary bike sans boot as well. Man…two shoes…the possibilities!!

First PT session

So I had My first PT session on Wed 1/13. It went well. Got some massage and started building strength in my ankle/ Calf with the rubber tension bands… doing 5 sessions a day with the bands. Calf still looks crypt-keeper though. Trying to make sure I don’t overdo it, just amped to get out and active again. I noticed a bit of soreness in the outside of my ankle but its attributed to lack of use. Tendon area feels good. I am also riding the exercise bike working up a sweat again. I missed that. I pretty much abandon the boot once I get home in the evening. My next visit with the doc is on 2/10 to get the official work to abandon the boot.

10 weeks post surgery

Saw the Doc again on 12/23. everything is healing up fine. He gave me another new boot since I seem to be pretty hard on them. I finally have PT scheduled to start Jan 13th. Looking forward to breaking up this scar tissue. I has a bit of a setback on my healing though when I had to take prednisone to clear up a nasty case of poison oak. This drug reduced the swelling which isn’t so hot for tissue healing. I am doing as much as I can with the boot and it really seems to have helped get my quad and hamstring back in shape. The only limitation I really have is the awkwardness of the boot. I have been chopping wood, completed lots of property clean-up (lots of elevation change on our acreage), I was even able to texture and paint my hallway over the Christmas break. The calf is pretty sad though…just a noodle! I see my doc again at the end of January and I think I will be back in shoes,,,hopefully sooner based on the PT progress. I really don’t even wear my boot once I am in the house for the evening. I just take it easy when I am walking around. The only thing I am supposed to avoid is trying to stand on my tip-toe while supporting my full weight.

new update

Its been awhile since I posted so I thought I better check in. I have been in the air boot for a few weeks now and things are coming along as expected. Per instruction I have been wearing the boot at all times except in the shower and to bed. I was lucky enough to end up with two boots so I have an outdoor boot and n indoor boot. Recently I have noticed some pain along the incision but I can really see the scar tissue starting to build up so I have attributed the minor pain to that. I go back to see the doc on the 23rd and will have my PT scheduled., The leg still looks a little funky around the incision site but the doc should be able to clear those questions up for me next week.

Still planning to hit the slopes end of Feb!!
