6 months after

Yesterday marked six months since my surgery to repair the tendon. Four weeks hard cast, 5 weeks walking boot, 12 rounds of physical therapy. The six month mark seems to be the time to resume normal activities, the physical therapist cleared me to start running at the 4 1/2 month mark and I did, first on a treadmill, then on the street. I am up to 1 1/2 miles, just a little pain dep in the ankle that quickly goes away. I would rate the recovery at 95%+. The main think is the calf muscle gets tired or a little weak after too much vigorous activity. But I was told at the 4 1/2 week mark that I could also start a little basketball workout, but to ease into it gradually which I have done. Everything seems fine with my movement and jumping, but psychologically it’s a hurdle because I torn the tendon coming down after jumping for a rebound. I hope to join the boys for basketball in early December, but to try a shorter time, not the full 1 1/2 hour series of pickup games. And to stop at the least bit of discomfort. good luck to me.

  1. Man, that’s awesome. Good luck!

  2. Gosh, that progress sounds nice! I’m at week 17 right now and have just now resumed PT after a minor setback. How many continuous sessions of PT did you have? Did the ankle improve dramatically after each one? How much has the incision area’s scar tissue go away? I hurt myself playing basketball and am itching to play something badly right now. I’m hoping to be able to work out on my own sometime after New Years. Best of luck with your recovery, I’ll be stopping by to check the recovery and measure my own against it. Thanks for the inspiration :)

  3. I meant to say at the 4 1/2 MONTH mark I was told that I could start basketball workouts. I went to 11 sessions, then I didn’t for another 3 weeks because I was in Poland for 2 1/2 weeks. then went one last time. I noticed an improvement after the first session with the exercises I was put through, then more gradual but improvement was definitely there. I know what you mean about itching to get some physical activity, I felt so good after I took my first 2 minute run on the treadmill at PT. The actual vertical scar really does not bother me at all. But I also had a cyst removed to the side, so I have a little horizontal cut also, and it is that area that is tender and sometimes bothersome. They had to go deeper into the tissue to remove the cyst. I have very slight pain in the heel area off to the side once in a great while, almost too little to mention. I dunno, at 58 I probably should give up hoops, but I like it too much. At this point it is more psychological about playing, about having the balls to get out there, but I plan to on Dec. 8 with the guys. Good luck.
