2nd Surgeon Appointment this Friday
11/10/2010
Hi all ,
Having read Tereasa1’s post and napatom2005 .
They both seem to be at the same stage in th st they are PWB ,
despite being 4 weeks apart since their original op’s.
With no disrepect meant to napatom , I want to be at the stage teresa is it come Friday .
I’m having no pains in the AT area or ankle and things feel good .
Only thing I’m getting is the odd stinging pain in the area that I think the scar is.
This only happens if I’m moving and it feels like (at a guess) like something(scab??) is getting caught in the dressing inside the cast and being pulled . Like I say , it only last a second or two.
I’m going back to see my doc this Friday(15th) and from what he said last visit , the plan is to put another cast on , this time my foot being at a different angle . This is the last thing I need at the moment I’ve had this cast on for 5 weeks and enough is enough . Is there any questions I can ask him to point him in the direction of a boot instead?
Any advice ,
tips,
questions I should ask ……..????
Is it possible to go from an angled cast (foot point towards the ground) to a PWB ?
Any help with be really appreciated

I moved from an angled cast to a less angled cast which has allowed me to partially weight bear.
You need to write a list of questions that you want an answer to before you go. The main thing is to ask your doctor what his rationale is for his treatment protocol
.Explain how frustrated you feel and that you need more information about your treatment. He/ she needs to remember that there is a person attached to the AT.
Hopefully there may be room for compromise or negotiation regarding your treatment plan.
Good luck and let us know how you get on

+1 to teresa1’s. And it might help to present your Doc with the great results that UWO and the other new studies got with fast protocols using boots. (Half of the patients studied got surgery, and they did great on average, too.)
There’s no necessary relationship between your immobilization angle and your WB. I was FWB, walking full speed without crutches, still with the full PF angle. (Actually, I even had THREE cm of heel lifts, by error, though UWO only used 2cm.) As long as your other foot is elevated as high, so you’re balanced, a boot or a “walking cast” (maybe with a “cast shoe” on it) can work fine for walking in Planterflexion/equinus/ballerina.

teresa and norm .
please excuse my stupidity in the follow :>)
teresa , so you have a cast on ?
in which your foot is flat so you can partially walk/weight bear on it ?
If thats the case , theres is a good chance , that could be what Iam getting.
I thought you had one of them boots you can take off .
Norm , as ever you are a wealth of knowledge .
dont understand it all the time :>) but its great
can you point me in the direction of the UWO protocol?

Yes I have a cast on which is set in partial equinus. This means that I can’t put my foot flat but I can partly put my weight and balance on the ball of my foot. I am having to wear slightly a higher heel on the other foot, but I’m still a bit uneven. The consultant was very anti boot as he had not had good experiences with them, though being the NHS I suspect it may partly be a funding issue. It’s worth asking though. Are you in the UK? I ask this as the UK experience seems different to the North American approach.

A right blog to come across information on this matter. Thanks for posting this, it’s informative. I’ll be going through your other posts; you can bet I’ll be back often to see your newer articles.
