Whenever I think about PT, I swing between imagining relaxing ultrasound massages and envisioning hours of grueling exercises! Today’s first session included an examination of my incision and a demonstration of some exercises- flexing the foot toward me from a neutral position, turning the foot to the left and right, doing these same exercises with isometric resistance, and some leg lifts for strengthening. There wasn’t anything too strenuous or painful! I also started to work with my crutches today- it didn’t exactly go well. I don’t know how I’ve made it to this age in my life without ever using crutches
Surgery report! Lasted 35 mins surgeon said tendon itself was healthy with no damage but the sheath around it called the paratenon was badly inflamed with nodules some adhesions so he excised 3.5 inches all up and down typical problem with many runners. .it Said it went very well just what he expected in splint 2 weeks boot 4 weeks. This injury while painful for months is humbling compared to what most all on this site have experienced. Nonetheless it might be helpful to any others having such a problem. Foot elevated now some pain at the incision wiggle toes and such. At 2 weeks stitches expected to come out pt to begin on rom so as to allow the tendon to glide without a sheath and avoid adhesions. Maddening being immobile trying stay busy have dumbells and a 35 pound kettle bell doing some core exercises and sit ups and such. I had general anesthesia still some groggy taken 2 Percocet.
xpf- great news! I’m glad the injury wasn’t more serious. Now, the tough part comes- trying not to go bonkers while you recover! Just don’t let the pain get ahead of you; take the percocet before things REALLY start to hurt. Chair exercise has helped. I am doing a chair exercise video for Seniors. I started to realize that my back was hurting from lack of activity and the video actually helps. Good luck!
Mmmmm ok you make me think I should take a Percocet then. I tried to avoid all day but it’s starting to be pretty bad despite 3 Advil so far today. And I remember the discharge nurse saying its best to get ahead of it and take some first 2-3 days. Took 3 yesterday day of surgery. Same on the back trying to move about some on crutches and simple exercises for core thanks for your good suggestion!
xpf -my doc said Motrin and Advil were off limits (after I’d already taken them 4 days) because they interfere with tendon healing. After 3 days, you probably won’t have much pain, so just take the prescription stuff until you feel better if you can tolerate it. Icing above the cast relieved pain as well and very light massage in the knee area to get blood flow. Once I got a boot, I opened it frequently and lightly rubbed my leg and foot to get the nerve endings going. It also really helped with pain and hot spots.
In the first few days after surgery, elevation (high) and careful bicycle movements also helped relieve pressure and pain.
Kimjax thanks so much for the good tips! Switched to Tylenol trying to avoid the Percocet but had to take one before bed last night pain at incision was hitting pretty hard. So icing above the cast is brilliant had not tried it it’s on now. Am 48 hours from when I left hospital and getting used to essentially being immobile is challenging! Crutching now and crawling on all fours, slinging some 15 lb dumbells around but mostly just elevating icing reading and watching tv. About to air bicycle and massage nice ideas. A tip for others I bought a shower chair but have opted to crawl to the bathroom literally kneel in front of the sink and wash up with soap and hot water that way even washing my hair in the sink. Pretty refreshing and gets me clean!
